CHAPTER 6 — THE NIGHT THEY TRIED TO STEAL HER DAUGHTER

CHAPTER 6 — THE NIGHT THEY TRIED TO STEAL HER DAUGHTER

It was just after midnight when the first alarm sounded at Vale Manor.

Not loud.

Just one soft chime.

Then another.

Inside the security command center, every monitor lit up red.

Motion detected.

North gate.

Perimeter breach.

The head of security spoke into his radio.

"Team Alpha, investigate."

No response.

He frowned.

"Alpha?"

Static.

Then silence.

Upstairs...

Anna was asleep beside Lily's crib.

Motherhood had changed her.

She no longer woke at every sound.

Only at the ones that felt wrong.

Tonight...

Something felt wrong.

She opened her eyes.

The house was too quiet.

Then the bedroom door slowly creaked open.

A shadow stepped inside.

Anna's heartbeat exploded.

Without thinking, she grabbed Lily from the crib.

"Who's there?"

No answer.

The figure lunged.

Anna screamed.

A lamp shattered against the wall.

The kidnapper grabbed the blanket—but not the baby.

Anna had already rolled behind the bed, clutching Lily tightly against her chest.

The panic button hidden beneath the nightstand clicked beneath her fingers.

Five seconds.

That was all it took.

Steel security doors slammed shut throughout the mansion.

Every exit locked automatically.

Emergency lights flooded the hallways.

The intruder realized too late...

He was trapped.

Outside...

Four black SUVs surrounded the estate.

Private security officers stormed every entrance.

The kidnappers tried escaping through the gardens.

They didn't get far.

Within minutes...

Three men lay handcuffed in the snow.

A fourth had disappeared.

Anna refused to let go of Lily.

The baby had slept through most of the attack.

Now she stirred, letting out a tiny cry.

Anna kissed her forehead over and over.

"I've got you."

"I'll always have you."

Claire entered the room moments later.

"Are you hurt?"

Anna shook her head.

"No."

"But this ends tonight."

Downstairs...

One of the captured kidnappers finally spoke.

"We weren't supposed to hurt the baby."

The detective stared at him.

"Then why were you here?"

The man looked defeated.

"Our orders were to take her."

"Who gave the orders?"

Silence.

Then...

"Richard Ashcroft."

Claire closed her eyes.

That confession changed everything.

Corporate fraud was one thing.

Attempted kidnapping of a newborn was another.

Ashcroft had crossed a line from which there was no return.

At dawn...

Federal prosecutors signed emergency arrest warrants.

Financial crimes.

Conspiracy.

Witness intimidation.

Kidnapping.

Attempted murder.

But when agents stormed Ashcroft's penthouse...

It was empty.

His helicopter was gone.

His private jet had disappeared from radar less than an hour earlier.

On the polished desk, investigators found only a single envelope addressed to Anna.

Inside was one handwritten sentence:

"Your grandfather won the first game. Let's see if you're willing to lose everything to win the second."

Anna folded the letter without a word.

Then she looked down at Lily sleeping peacefully in her arms.

Her expression changed.

For the first time since being thrown into the snow, she wasn't reacting to her enemies.

She was hunting them.

Across an ocean, aboard a private jet flying toward an unknown destination, Richard Ashcroft poured himself a glass of whiskey.

He believed he had escaped.

He smiled as the aircraft climbed above the clouds.

Then the cockpit door opened.

The co-pilot stepped inside, holding a satellite phone.

"Sir..."

Ashcroft frowned.

"What?"

The co-pilot swallowed hard.

"There's someone on the line."

"They said you'll want to answer."

Annoyed, Ashcroft took the phone.

A calm, familiar female voice greeted him.

"Good morning, Richard."

Ashcroft's face drained of color.

It was Anna.

She spoke only one final sentence before ending the call.

"You should look out the window."

May you like

Ashcroft turned toward the cabin window—

And watched two military fighter jets pull into formation on either side of his plane.
