CHAPTER 4 — THE SECRET ELIAS VALE TOOK TO HIS GRAVE

CHAPTER 4 — THE SECRET ELIAS VALE TOOK TO HIS GRAVE
Three days later...
Daniel sat inside a federal interrogation room.
He hadn't slept.
Every hour brought another piece of evidence.
Another frozen bank account.
Another witness.
Another charge.
He finally asked for his attorney.
"What are my options?"
The lawyer didn't answer immediately.
Instead, he slid a newspaper across the table.
The headline covered the front page.
VALE HEIRESS LAUNCHES $500 MILLION FAMILY FOUNDATION FOR SINGLE MOTHERS AND NEWBORNS.
Daniel stared.
She wasn't spending money on revenge.
She was rebuilding lives.
The realization hurt more than prison.
Meanwhile...
Anna returned to Vale Manor for the first time in years.
The mansion overlooked frozen cliffs and endless forests.
Everything reminded her of Elias Vale.
Her grandfather's study had remained untouched since his funeral.
Dust covered the shelves.
His favorite pipe still rested beside a leather chair.
Claire unlocked a hidden compartment behind the fireplace.
Inside sat an iron safe.
One envelope rested on top.
For Anna Alone.
Her hands trembled as she opened it.
Inside was another letter.
If this safe has been opened, then the truth can no longer wait.
Anna read slowly.
Daniel Carter was never chosen by accident.
Her heartbeat stopped.
She looked at Claire.
"What does this mean?"
Claire swallowed.
"Elias began investigating Hawthorne five years ago."
Anna frowned.
"The fraud?"
Claire nodded.
"He believed someone inside the company was laundering enormous amounts of money."
"And Daniel?"
"He appeared shortly afterward."
Anna felt sick.
"My grandfather suspected him?"
Claire shook her head.
"No."
"He suspected someone using Daniel."
Another file lay beneath the letter.
Photographs.
Old surveillance reports.
Financial maps.
One face appeared repeatedly.
Victor Hayes.
The missing former CEO.
Across another document...
A second name.
Richard Ashcroft.
Current Chairman of Hawthorne Development.
Anna's eyes widened.
"The chairman?"
Claire nodded slowly.
"Elias believed Ashcroft orchestrated the fraud while using younger executives as disposable shields."
Anna remembered something.
Ashcroft had welcomed her warmly at the meeting.
Almost...
Too warmly.
At that exact moment...
Richard Ashcroft entered his private office.
His assistant closed the door.
"Sir..."
"They've arrested Daniel."
Ashcroft calmly poured himself a drink.
"I expected that."
"The audit is expanding."
He smiled.
"It won't reach me."
The assistant hesitated.
"What about Anna Vale?"
Ashcroft looked toward the city skyline.
"I underestimated her grandfather."
A pause.
"But grandchildren..."
"...are much easier to manipulate."
His office phone rang.
An encrypted line.
He answered.
"Yes?"
The voice on the other end said only one sentence.
"Victor Hayes is alive."
The glass slipped from Ashcroft's hand and shattered across the marble floor.
For the first time in twenty years...
The man behind the empire looked afraid.
Miles away...
A quiet rehabilitation clinic sat hidden in the mountains.
An elderly man with silver hair slowly opened his eyes after years of living under a false identity.
A nurse whispered gently,
"Mr. Hayes..."
"Someone finally found you."
He smiled weakly.
Then spoke the words that would destroy everything.
May you like
"Tell Anna..."
"...her grandfather didn't die of natural causes."
