CHAPTER 5 — THE MAN WHO SAVED A LIFE TWICE

CHAPTER 5 — THE MAN WHO SAVED A LIFE TWICE
Arthur refused to let the contaminated IV bag leave his sight.
Within an hour, an independent toxicology laboratory confirmed what he had already suspected.
The medication had been altered.
Not enough to kill Natalie immediately.
Enough to keep her sedated, confused, and vulnerable. If her condition worsened, it could easily have been blamed on stress from "false memories."
Richard stared at the report.
"They've been erasing my daughter while keeping her alive."
Arthur nodded grimly.
"And someone inside this hospital is helping them."
Without informing the hospital administration, Arthur contacted an old friend—retired FBI investigator Daniel Hayes, now a private security consultant.
Daniel arrived before sunset.
Gray-haired, sharp-eyed, and impossible to intimidate.
After reviewing the evidence, he reached only one conclusion.
"This isn't a family dispute."
Richard frowned.
"What do you mean?"
Daniel placed the toxicology report beside the old accident photograph.
"Someone invested enormous money and planning into making Natalie disappear."
"For what?"
Daniel looked directly at Richard.
"People don't fake a death unless the living person is dangerous to someone's future."
Meanwhile, Mark continued searching the Whitman corporate archives.
After hours of bypassing old storage systems, he found something hidden under an obsolete server.
Not Project Phoenix itself.
Its financial records.
A series of payments.
Private hospital.
Private transportation.
Legal consulting.
Identity documentation.
Total expenditure:
$8.7 million.
Every payment had one approving signature.
Linda Whitman.
Mark felt sick.
His mother hadn't simply covered something up.
She had financed an entire operation.
He immediately called her.
"Mom..."
Linda answered calmly.
"Did you destroy the records?"
Mark ignored the question.
"What is Project Phoenix?"
Silence.
Then—
"You opened files that weren't meant for you."
"What did you do to Natalie?"
Another long pause.
Finally Linda spoke in a voice he had never heard before.
"I saved this family."
"You spent almost nine million dollars making a girl disappear!"
"I protected everything your stepfather built."
Mark's breathing became uneven.
"Protected it... from his own daughter?"
Linda hung up.
That same evening, Rosa quietly packed a small suitcase.
She had made her decision.
For two years she had remained silent.
Because she had been threatened.
Because she was afraid.
But after hearing Linda speak in the office...
Fear became guilt.
She boarded the first overnight flight to Boston.
Inside her handbag rested a small flash drive she had hidden for exactly twenty-four months.
No one knew it existed.
Not even Linda.
At the hospital, Natalie finally awoke without Eleanor sitting beside her.
The sedatives had been stopped.
Her thoughts felt clearer.
Richard entered carefully.
"I'll leave if you want."
Natalie watched him silently.
Then asked,
"...Did I really call you Dad?"
"You called me that from the day you learned to speak."
She closed her eyes.
Small fragments returned.
A birthday cake.
A beach vacation.
Learning to ride a bicycle.
A man running behind her, refusing to let go until she could balance alone.
"You let me fall."
Richard smiled sadly.
"I did."
"You said..."
His eyes filled with tears.
"...that brave girls always get back up."
Richard nodded.
"I remember."
Natalie looked at him for a long moment.
Then quietly whispered,
"I think... I remember too."
For the first time in two years, father and daughter embraced.
Neither noticed the tiny camera hidden inside the smoke detector recording everything.
Across town, Eleanor Collins watched the live video feed.
Her face remained unreadable.
Linda's voice came through the encrypted call.
"Has she remembered everything?"
"No."
"Can she identify us?"
"Not yet."
Linda exhaled slowly.
"Then there's still time."
Eleanor finally asked the question she had avoided for years.
"How much longer do we keep lying?"
Linda's answer came without hesitation.
"Until Richard signs the succession documents."
Eleanor froze.
"What?"
"If Natalie legally returns..."
Linda's voice hardened.
"...Mark loses control of Whitman Global."
Only then did Eleanor understand.
This had never been about revenge.
It had always been about inheritance.
About billions.
Late that night, Rosa arrived at Arthur's hotel.
She looked exhausted.
Terrified.
When Richard opened the door, she burst into tears.
"I'm sorry..."
He immediately recognized her.
"Rosa?"
She dropped to her knees.
"I should have told you two years ago."
Arthur gently helped her stand.
"What do you know?"
Rosa removed the flash drive from her purse.
"My security camera recorded everything."
Richard's hands trembled.
"What everything?"
Rosa looked directly into his eyes.
May you like
"The night Natalie disappeared..."
"...she came home alive."
