CHAPTER 6 — THE KEY THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

CHAPTER 6 — THE KEY THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

Daniel carefully opened the box.

Inside were three objects.

A brass key.

A leather journal.

And a sealed envelope addressed in Henry Mercer's handwriting.

For Whoever Still Believes The Truth Matters.

Walter closed his eyes.

"Henry..."

Ethan handed me the letter.

My fingers trembled.

Inside, Henry had written only one page.

Vivian is guilty.

But she is also afraid.

The real architect sits above her.

He has never signed a document.

Never attended a board meeting.

Never appeared on foundation records.

He survives because everyone mistakes influence for innocence.

His name is Arthur Caldwell.

Walter suddenly staggered backward.

"No..."

Daniel caught him before he fell.

"You know him?"

Walter's face had lost all color.

"Arthur Caldwell isn't just a businessman."

"He's been legal adviser to half the state's largest charities."

"And..."

Walter hesitated.

"He was Henry's closest friend."

We opened the leather journal.

Every page documented meetings.

Private conversations.

Account numbers.

Dates.

Names.

Henry had spent the last five years of his life secretly investigating his own foundation.

Near the final pages, one sentence was underlined twice.

Never confront Arthur without proof he cannot destroy.

Daniel turned another page.

A photograph slipped onto the floor.

It showed Henry standing beside Arthur Caldwell...

...and Eleanor Brooks.

Taken only three weeks before Eleanor supposedly died.

On the back was a handwritten note.

She knew too much.

Before anyone could speak...

Footsteps echoed above us.

Not one person.

Several.

Heavy boots crossing the broken chapel floor.

Daniel immediately switched off his flashlight.

Everyone froze.

Then came voices.

One man laughed.

Another said,

"Search everywhere."

A third voice answered,

"They couldn't have gotten far."

Ethan whispered,

"They followed us."

Daniel slowly peeked toward the staircase.

His expression hardened.

"There are at least six."

"Armed?"

"I can't tell."

Then...

A familiar voice drifted down into the crypt.

Calm.

Confident.

Cold.

Victor Hale.

"I know you're down there."

No one answered.

Victor continued.

"Mrs. Mercer..."

"You've already found the box."

A pause.

"So let's stop pretending."

Another pause.

Then the words that made every hair on my arms stand up—

"You have exactly sixty seconds..."

May you like

"...to hand me Henry Mercer's journal..."

"...before someone else in this family dies."
