CHAPTER 4 — THE VIDEO VIVIAN THOUGHT NO ONE HAD

CHAPTER 4 — THE VIDEO VIVIAN THOUGHT NO ONE HAD
The internet exploded before sunrise.
By six o'clock the next morning, millions of people had watched the wedding video.
Not the polished version.
The raw footage.
Someone had uploaded the unedited recording from three different camera angles.
There was nowhere for Vivian to hide.
Every cruel word.
Every expression.
Every second she held my wig above her head.
It spread across every major platform.
People weren't debating whether she had gone too far.
They were asking why no one had stopped her sooner.
Television producers requested interviews.
Medical advocacy groups condemned her behavior.
Cancer support organizations shared my story with one message:
No patient should ever be publicly humiliated for surviving.
I ignored every request.
This wasn't about becoming famous.
It was about staying alive.
At eight thirty that morning, my phone rang.
The caller ID displayed one name.
Special Agent Laura Bennett.
"I assume you've seen the news."
"I have."
"It changes nothing."
Her voice remained calm.
"Our investigation continues."
"Have you reviewed the files?"
"Every page."
A brief pause.
"Mrs. Mercer..."
"Your evidence is stronger than you realize."
My pulse quickened.
"What does that mean?"
"We found something you didn't."
Silence.
"There are payments leaving the foundation that don't end with Vivian."
My mind raced.
"Someone above her?"
"We're not ready to say."
"But she wasn't acting alone."
An hour later, Ethan walked into the kitchen carrying a stack of newspapers.
Every front page featured the same photograph.
Vivian holding my wig.
He tossed them onto the table.
"I can't believe she's my mother."
I took his hand.
"She made her choices."
He nodded slowly.
"So do we."
Before I could answer, the front doorbell rang.
Daniel checked the security camera.
His face darkened.
"You're not going to believe this."
He turned the monitor toward us.
Standing on our front porch...
...was Vivian.
She wasn't alone.
Beside her stood an elegant man in an expensive navy suit carrying a leather briefcase.
Walter Simmons, still seated at the kitchen table, went completely pale.
"No..."
Ethan looked at him.
"You know him?"
Walter whispered only three words.
"That's Victor Hale."
"Who's Victor?"
Walter's voice shook.
"The fixer."
"What fixer?"
"The man wealthy families hire..."
"...when they need scandals buried..."
"...witnesses silenced..."
"...and evidence to disappear."
The doorbell rang again.
Longer this time.
Then a third time.
Victor Hale looked directly into the security camera.
Smiled.
And slowly held up a sealed envelope with my name written across the front.
AMELIA CARTER MERCER

At the bottom, in elegant handwriting, were six chilling words:
A gift from someone you buried.
