CHAPTER 8 — THE FINAL TRAP

CHAPTER 8 — THE FINAL TRAP

Three hours later.

An abandoned shipping terminal outside the city.

Daniel stood alone beneath a towering warehouse crane.

His hands were visible.

No weapon.

No bodyguards.

No escape vehicle.

It looked too easy.

Agent Brooks ordered every sniper into position.

"Loudspeaker."

An officer stepped forward.

"Daniel Cross! Raise your hands!"

Daniel smiled.

"I've been waiting."

His eyes found mine.

"You came."

I stepped forward despite Brooks' warning.

"Why?"

"Why did you choose me?"

Daniel laughed softly.

"I didn't choose you."

"Your family chose this decades ago."

"My father and your father built Phoenix together."

Jonathan stepped forward.

"That's a lie."

Daniel smiled.

"No."

"You betrayed my father."

"You stole everything."

Jonathan shook his head.

"Victor wanted to sell classified technology to foreign governments."

"I refused."

"You called that betrayal."

Daniel's smile disappeared.

"My father died because of you."

"He died because of his own choices."

For the first time, genuine rage crossed Daniel's face.

He pressed a small remote hidden in his palm.

A loud electronic beep echoed across the terminal.

Agent Brooks screamed.

"Bomb!"

Everyone dove for cover.

But...

Nothing happened.

Daniel stared at the remote.

Confused.

Pressed it again.

Still nothing.

Then a familiar voice echoed from the warehouse speakers.

"Looking for this?"

Sarah stepped out holding an identical detonator.

She smiled.

"I switched yours while everyone was watching the letter."

Daniel's face turned white.

"You..."

"I learned from the best liar I've ever met."

Before he could react, tactical agents rushed from every direction.

Daniel ran.

He climbed a metal staircase toward the rooftop.

I followed before anyone could stop me.

"Maya!"

Brooks shouted.

"Don't!"

At the top of the building, rain poured over the steel roof.

Daniel reached the edge.

Below was a forty-foot drop.

Police lights flashed in every direction.

There was nowhere left to go.

He looked at me.

"I did love you."

I shook my head.

"No."

"You loved control."

"You loved money."

"You never loved me."

For the first time since I'd met him...

...he looked defeated.

He slowly dropped the pistol he had hidden behind his back.

Agents surrounded him.

"Cross! On your knees!"

He smiled one last time.

"You think this ends today?"

"It already has."

He reached into his pocket.

Everyone froze.

Instead of a weapon...

...he removed a wedding ring.

Mine.

The ring he had slipped onto my finger only hours earlier.

He placed it gently on the rooftop.

"A perfect plan."

"Ruined by one sister."

He raised his hands.

"I surrender."

EPILOGUE — ONE YEAR LATER

The Phoenix Organization collapsed.

More than one hundred members were arrested across six countries.

The corrupt officials who had protected them were exposed.

Daniel Cross pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including attempted murder, fraud, conspiracy, identity theft, and organized crime. He received multiple life sentences without the possibility of parole.

Jonathan Bennett publicly revealed the truth behind his disappearance and was finally cleared of every accusation that had haunted his name for two decades.

Sarah declined every television interview.

When reporters called her a hero, she always answered the same way:

"I only did what any sister should do."

As for me...

I sold the mansion Daniel had bought with stolen money.

I used my inheritance to establish the Bennett Foundation, funding legal aid for victims of financial fraud and shelters for survivors of domestic abuse.

Exactly one year after the wedding that never became a marriage, I returned to the Grand Conservatory.

The shattered ballroom had been completely restored.

This time there were no orchids.

No lavish cake.

No orchestra.

Just a quiet garden overlooking a lake.

Sarah stood beside me, smiling.

"You okay?"

I looked at the place where my life had almost ended.

Then I smiled back.

"For the first time in a long time..."

"I finally am."

She slipped her arm through mine.

We walked away together, leaving behind the ghosts of betrayal, fear, and deception.

The wedding ended in ruins.

May you like

But the life that began afterward was built on something far stronger than perfection—

the truth.
