CHAPTER 7 — THE MAN WHO RETURNED FROM THE DEAD

CHAPTER 7 — THE MAN WHO RETURNED FROM THE DEAD
Nobody moved.
The room seemed to stop breathing.
I stared through the bulletproof glass at the elderly man standing in the rain.
My father had died twenty years ago.
I had stood beside his coffin.
I had cried at his funeral.
I had visited his grave every birthday.
Yet the man outside looked exactly like the photographs I remembered—older, thinner, but unmistakably him.
"My name is Jonathan Bennett," he repeated calmly. "And I'm Maya's father."
Agent Brooks didn't lower her weapon.
"If this is a trick, it won't work."
"It isn't."
The old man slowly reached into his jacket.
Every rifle in the room pointed at his chest.
He carefully removed a worn leather wallet and held it up.
Inside was a faded photograph.
A little girl wearing a yellow raincoat sat on a man's shoulders, both laughing beneath a fountain.
I gasped.
No one else had ever seen that picture.
It had disappeared after my father's funeral.
Tears blurred my vision.
"Dad...?"
The old man's eyes filled with tears.
"You still have that tiny scar above your eyebrow," he whispered.
"You got it climbing the old oak tree because you wanted to rescue a kitten."
My knees weakened.
I had never told David.
I had never told the FBI.
Only my father knew.
Agent Brooks signaled two agents.
"Bring him inside. Search him first."
An hour later, Jonathan Bennett sat across from me.
He looked exhausted.
Older than his years.
Haunted.
"I'm sorry," he said quietly.
"I never wanted you to believe I abandoned you."
"Then why?" I cried.
"Why let me think you were dead?"
He closed his eyes.
"Because if they knew I was alive..."
"...they would have killed you."
Silence settled over the room.
"The Phoenix Organization wasn't just a criminal network," he explained.
"It had judges, politicians, bankers, intelligence officers—even people inside federal agencies."
"I tried to expose them."
"I failed."
"They murdered your mother."
My breath caught.
"The car accident..."
"...wasn't an accident."
He nodded.
"They sabotaged her brakes."
Tears rolled down my face.
"They came for me next."
"So the FBI created a false death."
"I disappeared."
"I spent twenty years gathering evidence."
He looked directly at me.
"I came back because Daniel made one mistake."
"He underestimated your sister."
Sarah looked down, overwhelmed.
"If you hadn't warned Maya..."
Jonathan's voice cracked.
"...I would have lost my daughter forever."
Just then, Agent Brooks received an urgent call.
She answered.
Her expression changed instantly.
"What?"
Everyone looked at her.
She lowered the phone slowly.
"We found Daniel."
"Where?"
She swallowed.
"He wants to surrender."
"No," Jonathan whispered immediately.
"That's not Daniel."
"What do you mean?"
May you like
"He never surrenders."
"It's a trap."
