CHAPTER 7 – THE PROMISE HER FATHER KEPT

CHAPTER 7 – THE PROMISE HER FATHER KEPT
Audrey stared at the phone long after the call ended.
Only one thought echoed through her mind.
My father knew Edward Hawthorne?
Her father had never spoken about the Hawthorne family—one of the wealthiest dynasties in the country. Their businesses stretched across real estate, finance, technology, and international shipping. They were powerful enough that governments sought their investment.
Sophia looked up from her desk.
"What's wrong?"
Audrey slowly lowered the phone.
"Edward Hawthorne says he made a promise to my father."
Two days later...
Audrey arrived at the Hawthorne Estate.
The enormous iron gates opened before her.
Edward Hawthorne, a dignified man in his seventies, greeted her personally.
The moment he saw Audrey wearing her mother's necklace, his eyes filled with emotion.
"You have your mother's smile," he said softly.
Audrey blinked in surprise.
"You knew my parents?"
Edward nodded.
"They saved my life."
He led her into a private library where an old wooden box rested on the table.
"I've kept this for twenty-five years."
Inside were letters...
Photographs...
Business contracts...
And one sealed envelope with Audrey's name written in her father's handwriting.
Her hands trembled as she opened it.
My dearest Audrey,
If you are reading this, it means I am no longer here to protect you.
Never measure your worth by what others give you.
The right people will love you before they discover your wealth.
If they only value you after learning the truth... they never loved you at all.
Tears blurred her vision.
Edward spoke quietly.
"Your father invested in my company when everyone else abandoned me. He refused repayment."
"What did he ask for instead?"
Edward smiled.
"He asked me to protect his daughter if she ever needed help."
Audrey closed the letter against her heart.
"My father was still protecting me..."
"Even now," Edward replied.
That evening, Edward made an announcement that stunned the business world.
At a nationally televised charity gala, he introduced Audrey as the newest strategic partner of Hawthorne Global Investments.
Reporters erupted with questions.
"Miss Bennett, is this your first public business partnership?"
Edward answered before she could.
"No."
He smiled proudly.
"It's simply the first time she's allowed the world to know who she really is."
Across the ballroom, Dominic watched the broadcast on a television inside a small apartment he now rented.
He barely recognized the woman on the screen.
She stood confidently beside one of the most respected businessmen in the country.
The entire audience rose to applaud her.
