CHAPTER 3 – THE QUEEN RETURNS

CHAPTER 3 – THE QUEEN RETURNS

Dominic could not hear the voices around him anymore.

The boardroom seemed to spin as the documents slipped through his trembling fingers.

"There has to be some mistake," he said, looking desperately from one director to another. "I've run this company for years."

"You managed it," Sophia corrected calmly. "You never owned it."

Silence answered him.

Every director sitting around the polished oak table avoided his eyes. They had all known. Some had known from the very beginning.

Sophia opened another folder.

"Two years ago, Ashford Construction was six weeks away from bankruptcy. Every bank had rejected another loan."

Dominic remembered those sleepless nights.

He remembered believing some anonymous investment group had saved the company at the last moment.

"You always wondered who rescued your business," Sophia continued.

She slid a single contract across the table.

"The investor was Audrey."

Dominic's breathing stopped.

"No..."

"Through Sterling Horizon Holdings, she injected forty-eight million dollars into this company. She paid every outstanding debt, negotiated your contracts, and personally guaranteed the loans that kept your employees working."

One of the older board members cleared his throat.

"If it weren't for Mrs. Bennett, none of us would still have jobs."

Dominic slowly looked around the room.

"So... everyone knew?"

The chairman nodded.

"She instructed us never to tell you."

"Why?"

"Because she wanted to know whether you loved her... or her money."

The words landed harder than any punch.

Dominic remembered every insult Audrey had quietly endured.

Every birthday he had forgotten.

Every dinner Victoria had mocked her thrift-store clothes.

Every time he had remained silent.

He hadn't protected her once.

Sophia stood.

"Security is waiting outside."

His eyes widened.

"Security?"

"You are no longer authorized to enter this building after today."

"You can't throw me out!"

"I can."

She handed him one final envelope.

"Your termination agreement."

Dominic laughed bitterly.

"I built this company."

"No," Sophia said. "You built your title. Audrey built your future."

Two security officers stepped into the room.

Every employee outside the glass walls watched in stunned silence as Dominic Ashford—the man everyone believed owned the company—was escorted out carrying a single cardboard box.

Inside it were only a framed family photo...

...and the wedding picture he suddenly realized Audrey had disappeared from weeks ago.

She had already begun letting go.

Outside, reporters gathered after hearing rumors of an executive shake-up.

Cameras flashed the moment Dominic emerged.

"Mr. Ashford!"

"Is it true you've been removed as CEO?"

"Who owns Ashford Construction now?"

"Did your wife really control the company?"

He pushed through the crowd without answering.

His phone rang.

Victoria.

"Dominic! Where are you?"

"What is it?"

"You need to come home immediately."

Her voice, usually commanding, now shook with panic.

"There are people here."

"What people?"

"They're changing the locks."

Twenty minutes later...

Dominic slammed on the brakes in front of the mansion.

Three black luxury SUVs blocked the driveway.

Professional movers carried expensive furniture outside while locksmiths replaced every lock.

"What the hell is happening?"

A man in a tailored gray suit approached.

"Mr. Ashford?"

"Yes."

"I'm Daniel Brooks, property manager for Sterling Horizon Holdings."

Dominic's stomach dropped.

"The property has changed possession."

"This is my house."

Daniel handed him an official document.

"No, sir."

He pointed toward the ownership records.

"The mansion has always belonged to Sterling Horizon Holdings."

Dominic stared blankly.

"Audrey purchased it before your wedding."

Behind him, Victoria stormed outside.

"You can't do this!"

Daniel remained polite.

"We already have."

Victoria pointed toward the marble staircase.

"I've lived here for years!"

"You've been permitted to live here."

"By whom?"

Daniel looked directly at Dominic.

"By Mrs. Audrey Bennett."

For the first time in her life...

Victoria had no words.

May you like

Then Daniel delivered the final blow.

"You have one hour to remove your personal belongings."
