CHAPTER 5 — The Truth Claire Never Knew

CHAPTER 5 — The Truth Claire Never Knew
For the first time in years, Nathan Whitmore woke before sunrise.
Not because of work.
Not because of a business flight or a golf trip.
Because he had dreamed of a heartbeat.
He sat upright in the empty bedroom, the echo of the recording still haunting him.
Claire's voice.
"I can't wait to watch your face when you hear this."
He buried his face in his hands.
"I never even listened..."
His phone rang.
The caller ID read: Dr. Emily Carter.
Nathan frowned. Why would Claire's doctor be calling him?
He answered immediately.
"This is Nathan."
"Mr. Whitmore, this is Dr. Carter from Portland Memorial Hospital."
"I know who you are."
There was a brief silence.
"I'd like you to come to the hospital today."
Nathan's stomach tightened.
"Is this about Claire?"
"I can't discuss details over the phone."
"Is she all right?"
Another pause.
"Please come alone."
An hour later, Nathan sat across from Dr. Carter in a private consultation room.
She looked calm but distant, the kind of distance doctors developed when speaking to people who had already made irreversible mistakes.
"You wanted to see me?"
"I did."
She folded her hands.
"I debated whether this conversation was appropriate."
Nathan leaned forward.
"What is it?"
Dr. Carter opened a medical file.
"When Claire arrived after the assault, she was unconscious."
Nathan nodded slowly.
"Yes."
"As part of emergency treatment, we performed a full medical evaluation."
He waited.
"There was something in those results that Claire asked us not to share with anyone until she decided what to do."
Nathan frowned.
"What are you talking about?"
Dr. Carter met his eyes.
"We completed routine genetic screening related to the pregnancy."
Nathan's heartbeat quickened.
"The results confirmed that you were the biological father."
He stared at her.
"What?"
"We verified it twice because of the legal circumstances."
Nathan blinked.
"I never questioned that."
"You may not have."
She slid another envelope across the table.
"But someone else did."
Inside was a laboratory request form.
The name requesting additional verification nearly made Nathan stop breathing.
Margaret Whitmore.
"What is this?"
"Approximately four weeks before Claire's miscarriage, your mother contacted a private laboratory."
Nathan looked up.
"My mother?"
"She claimed there were concerns about the baby's paternity."
Nathan felt physically ill.
"Claire knew?"
Dr. Carter nodded.
"Margaret confronted her after one of her prenatal appointments."
Claire had never forgotten that afternoon.
She had been leaving the clinic with a folder of ultrasound pictures pressed against her chest.
Margaret was waiting beside her car.
"You look happy," Margaret had said.
"I am."
Margaret smiled coldly.
"That won't last."
She handed Claire an envelope.
Inside was paperwork requesting prenatal DNA testing.
Claire stared at it in confusion.
"What is this?"
"A chance to prove you aren't lying."
Claire looked up.
"Lying about what?"
"The baby."
Claire had laughed in disbelief.
"You think I cheated on Nathan?"
"I know women like you."
"I've never been with anyone else."
Margaret stepped closer.
"Then you'll have no problem taking the test."
Claire remembered how her hands had shaken.
"I don't need to prove anything."
"You do if you expect my son to raise another man's child."
Claire had walked away in tears.
She never told Nathan.
She had convinced herself there was no point.
He would only believe his mother.
Back in the present, Nathan couldn't speak.
Dr. Carter quietly continued.
"Claire eventually agreed to the additional testing."
"When?"
"The sample was collected during a routine prenatal visit."
Nathan stared at the report.
"The results came back three days before the assault."
He slowly turned the page.
Across the top were the words:
Probability of paternity: 99.9999%.
Dr. Carter's voice softened.
"Claire planned to surprise you with the results because she believed they would finally silence the accusations."
Nathan let out a broken laugh that sounded more like a sob.
"She... she thought I'd defend her."
"I believe she hoped you would."
Instead...
He had arrived at the hospital with his mistress.
Across town, Claire had started her first counseling session.
The office was quiet, filled with warm light and bookshelves instead of hospital equipment.
The therapist, Dr. Hannah Lewis, spoke gently.
"You don't have to tell me everything today."
Claire nodded.
"I don't know where to begin."
"Start with the first thing that comes to mind."
Claire looked down.
"I keep apologizing."
"To whom?"
"My baby."
The room fell silent.
"I wasn't supposed to survive them," Claire whispered.
"What makes you say that?"
"My mother died when I was twelve."
She took a slow breath.
"I promised myself that if I ever had a child... they would always feel safe."
Tears slipped down her cheeks.
"I couldn't keep that promise."
Dr. Lewis handed her a box of tissues.
"What happened wasn't your choice."
"I know."
"Do you believe that?"
Claire closed her eyes.
"...Not yet."
Nathan drove home in a daze.
Every traffic light.
Every street corner.
Every familiar building seemed strangely distant.
He walked into the house carrying the paternity report.
Vanessa looked up from the dining room.
"You're home early."
He placed the report on the table.
"My mother accused Claire of carrying another man's child."
Vanessa frowned.
"What?"
Nathan handed her the lab results.
"It was my baby."
Vanessa skimmed the page before setting it down.
"Nathan..."
He interrupted quietly.
"Did you know?"
She hesitated.
His heart sank.
"You knew."
Vanessa lowered her eyes.
"Margaret mentioned it once."
"What exactly did she say?"
"She told me Claire was trying to trap you with someone else's baby."
"And you believed her?"
"I... I didn't ask questions."
Nathan stared at her.
"You moved into my marriage without asking a single question."
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
"I loved you."
"No."
His voice was calm.
"You loved the version of me that ignored everyone else's pain."
She flinched.
Nathan walked upstairs.
An hour later, Vanessa heard the front door open again.
She looked outside.
Nathan was carrying every suitcase she owned.
He placed them neatly on the front porch.
Then he came back inside.
"We're done."
She stared at him.
"You're throwing me out?"
"I already threw away the person who mattered."
He opened the front door.
"I'm not making that mistake twice."
Vanessa stood frozen.
"You can't blame everything on me."
"I don't."
Nathan looked at her one last time.
"I blame myself."
She walked out without another word.
The front door closed behind her with a quiet click.
The house was silent again.
Nathan leaned against the wall, exhausted.
Then his phone buzzed.
A message from Detective Brooks.
Mr. Whitmore, we've identified who anonymously sent the security footage. We'd like you to come in tomorrow morning. You may want to prepare yourself. It's someone very close to your family.
Nathan read the message twice.
Only a handful of people had ever entered that hallway.
Only a handful of people even knew there had once been a hidden camera.
As the realization began to take shape, a chill ran through him.
May you like
Whoever had exposed Margaret...
Had been living with the truth all along.
