CHAPTER 3 — The Recording No One Was Supposed to See

CHAPTER 3 — The Recording No One Was Supposed to See

Claire stood frozen in the middle of her empty apartment.

The detective's words echoed through the quiet room.

"A security camera recording."

For a long moment, she couldn't speak.

Finally, she whispered, "Who sent it?"

"We don't know," Detective Daniel Brooks replied. "It arrived anonymously this morning. No return address. The sender paid cash for overnight delivery."

Claire swallowed hard.

"Are you sure it shows what happened?"

"It does more than that."

Her fingers tightened around the phone.

"It shows your mother-in-law deliberately pushing you from behind."

Claire closed her eyes.

For days she had replayed that morning, wondering if the concussion had distorted her memory.

Now she knew.

She hadn't imagined anything.

"It also records the conversation before the assault," Brooks continued. "The audio is clear enough to hear Mrs. Whitmore mention a woman named Vanessa."

Claire felt her knees weaken and sat on the bare floor.

"So... she can't deny it anymore."

"No."

There was another pause before the detective added quietly, "Ms. Bennett, because your pregnancy ended as a direct result of the assault, this case is being treated far more seriously than a simple domestic dispute."

Claire stared at the blank wall across from her.

For the first time since waking in the hospital, she felt something other than grief.

Not relief.

Not happiness.

Justice.

Across town, Nathan was halfway through a meeting when his phone vibrated.

Portland Police Department

He frowned before stepping into the hallway.

"This is Nathan Whitmore."

"Mr. Whitmore, this is Detective Brooks. We'd like you and Mrs. Margaret Whitmore to come to the precinct this afternoon regarding your wife's accident."

Nathan relaxed.

"Of course. Mom already explained everything. Claire slipped."

"I'm afraid new evidence has changed our understanding of the incident."

Nathan's smile faded.

"What kind of evidence?"

"You'll see it when you arrive."

The line disconnected.

Nathan stared at the phone.

A strange uneasiness settled in his stomach.

Margaret was far less concerned.

When Nathan told her about the call, she scoffed.

"They're wasting everyone's time."

"They said they have new evidence."

"What evidence?"

"I don't know."

She waved a dismissive hand.

"Claire probably invented another story."

Nathan wanted to believe her.

But he couldn't forget the doctor's face in the hospital.

Or Claire's silence.

She hadn't screamed.

Hadn't begged.

Hadn't defended herself.

She had simply looked at him as if he were already a stranger.

At two o'clock that afternoon, Nathan and Margaret entered the police station.

Detective Brooks greeted them without a smile.

"Please follow me."

They were led into a small interview room.

A television monitor stood against one wall.

Another detective closed the door behind them.

Margaret folded her arms.

"This is ridiculous."

Brooks inserted a flash drive into the computer.

"Mrs. Whitmore, before we begin, I'd advise you to answer carefully."

She laughed.

"I have nothing to hide."

The screen flickered to life.

A timestamp appeared.

8:16:42 A.M.

The image showed the upstairs hallway of Nathan's home.

Margaret's confident expression vanished.

Nathan leaned forward.

"I... didn't know we had a camera there."

"We didn't," Margaret answered automatically.

Then she froze.

Everyone in the room heard her.

Brooks looked at her calmly.

"You didn't know because you assumed it had been removed during renovations."

Margaret said nothing.

The video continued.

Claire stood near the staircase, one hand resting protectively against her abdomen.

The audio filled the room.

"You trapped him."

Nathan's eyes widened.

Then came Claire's voice.

"Nathan knows. He was happy."

Margaret's cold reply followed.

"Nathan is happy with Vanessa."

Nathan slowly turned toward his mother.

"What... did you say?"

No one answered.

The recording continued.

Claire turned away.

Margaret stepped closer.

Then—

A violent shove.

Claire pitched forward.

Her scream echoed through the speakers as her body struck the wooden stairs over and over before disappearing from view.

Silence filled the interview room.

Nathan had stopped breathing.

Margaret's face had gone completely white.

The detective paused the video.

"No slipping," he said quietly.

"No accident."

Nathan looked at his mother as though seeing her for the first time.

"You pushed her."

Margaret's lips trembled.

"I... I barely touched her."

"We measured the force frame by frame," Brooks replied.

"The video contradicts that statement."

Nathan stood abruptly.

"Mom..."

"I didn't mean for—"

"You killed my baby."

The words escaped him before he even realized he had spoken them.

Margaret burst into tears.

"I only wanted her gone! I never thought—"

"Enough," Brooks interrupted.

"Mrs. Whitmore, anything further you say may be used as evidence."

Another officer entered the room.

"Margaret Whitmore, you're under arrest on suspicion of aggravated assault resulting in severe bodily injury. Additional charges are under review pending consultation with the district attorney."

Cold metal handcuffs clicked around Margaret's wrists.

"Nathan!" she cried.

He didn't move.

She looked at her son desperately.

"Tell them it was an accident!"

Nathan couldn't.

He had just watched the truth with his own eyes.

As officers escorted Margaret away, Detective Brooks turned back to Nathan.

"There is one more matter."

Nathan looked up numbly.

"What now?"

Brooks slid a thin folder across the table.

"We also executed a warrant for financial records connected to your household."

Nathan frowned.

"What financial records?"

"Over the past three years, approximately $2.8 million was transferred from several family investment accounts."

Nathan blinked.

"So?"

"The transfers required two signatures."

Nathan nodded absentmindedly.

"Mine and Claire's."

Brooks opened the folder.

"That's the problem."

Nathan looked down.

Every authorization form bore his signature.

Beside it...

Claire's signature.

Only they weren't the same signature at all.

A forensic examiner's report lay clipped to the front.

Evidence indicates repeated forgery of Claire Bennett's signature across multiple financial documents.

Nathan stared at the pages.

His face drained of color.

Slowly...

Very slowly...

He turned toward the empty doorway through which his mother had just been taken.

A horrifying realization settled over him.

If Margaret had forged Claire's signature...

How many things had happened inside his own family...

May you like

Without him ever knowing?
