Chapter 4: The Trap Closes

Chapter 4: The Trap Closes
Allison made one fatal mistake.
She believed I was still the husband who trusted every word she said.
The morning after the search, she called me twenty-three times.
I answered on the twenty-fourth.
Her voice broke into fake sobs immediately.
"Ryder, please... they're treating me like a criminal."
"You attacked my mother."
"It was an accident."
"You forged her signature."
"Charles handled the paperwork."
"So now you're blaming my brother?"
"I didn't mean—"
I ended the call.
Exactly as Detective Morales had instructed.
Every conversation was being recorded.
Every lie mattered.
An hour later she called again.
This time she sounded calmer.
"I'll tell you everything."
"I just don't want to go to prison."
I kept my voice steady.
"What do you want?"
"Meet me."
"At the lake house."
The same lake house where I had proposed to her six years earlier.
The detective smiled when I repeated her request.
"Perfect."
"She thinks she's controlling the meeting."
"In reality..."
"We'll be controlling her."
By sunset, unmarked police vehicles surrounded the woods nearly half a mile away.
Hidden microphones had been placed inside the cabin.
Officers waited silently.
I walked in alone.
Allison stood by the fireplace wearing the blue dress I had bought her in Paris.
She had done her makeup perfectly.
Anyone looking from outside would think she was preparing for a romantic evening.
She walked toward me with tears in her eyes.
"I've missed you."
I stepped back.
"You missed my salary."
Her expression flickered.
Only for a second.
Then the performance returned.
"You've been manipulated."
"That maid poisoned your mind."
"You mean Jade?"
"She's obsessed with you."
I almost laughed.
Even now, she was trying to create another victim.
"I've seen the videos."
Silence.
"I've heard the recordings."
Her face slowly lost all color.
"You... what?"
"The hidden cameras."
For the first time since I met Allison...
She looked genuinely afraid.
"There weren't any cameras."
"There were."
"They were simply better than the ones you removed."
She stared at me.
Then something inside her snapped.
"No."
"You don't understand!"
She grabbed my arm.
"I had no choice!"
"Your mother ruined everything!"
"My brother paid you."
She froze.
One heartbeat.
Two.
Then she whispered the words every detective dreams of hearing.
"I did what Charles told me to do."
Outside, Detective Morales raised one hand.
Every officer activated their recording equipment.
Inside the cabin, Allison kept talking.
"He said your mother would never leave the property to him."
"He said once she was declared mentally incompetent..."
"...he could sell everything."
"So you tortured her?"
"I only did enough to make her look unstable!"
Her breathing became frantic.
"I wasn't supposed to hurt her that badly."
"You broke her wrist."
"I panicked!"
"You starved her."
"Charles said it would make her weaker!"
"You beat Jade."
"She wouldn't stop protecting the old woman!"
Every confession echoed through the hidden microphones.
She suddenly realized what she had admitted.
Her eyes widened.
"You..."
She looked around the cabin.
"...you're recording me."
Before I could answer, the front door burst open.
"Police!"
Detective Morales led the team inside.
Allison stumbled backward, horror spreading across her face as officers surrounded her.
As one detective placed handcuffs on her wrists, she screamed only one sentence.
"You should arrest Charles first!"
The room fell silent.
Detective Morales looked at her calmly.
A slow smile crossed his face.
"We already did."
Allison's knees gave out.

She collapsed onto the wooden floor, finally understanding that the entire empire of lies she and Charles had built over the past eight months had collapsed in a single evening.
But none of us yet knew that the evidence seized from Charles's office would uncover a family secret buried for more than thirty years—one that would change the Dawson family forever.
