Chapter 3: The Name That Destroyed Everything

Chapter 3: The Name That Destroyed Everything

The drive sat on the detective's desk between us like it weighed a hundred pounds.

No one touched it.

No one spoke.

Finally, Detective Morales slid a printed bank statement across the table.

"Take a look."

My eyes dropped to the sender's name.

Then everything around me seemed to disappear.

Charles Dawson.

My older brother.

The man who had helped raise me after our father died.

The man I trusted with every family decision while I worked overseas.

"This has to be fake," I whispered.

"I wish it were."

The detective opened a thick folder.

"Monthly transfers. Every thirty days. Fifteen thousand dollars each."

He pointed to the payment descriptions.

Care Expenses.

Medical Support.

Property Management.

Money that Charles claimed he was sending to help care for our mother.

Money Allison had been receiving instead.

For four straight months.

"I don't understand..."

Detective Morales looked at me carefully.

"I think you do."

I did.

Every time I called home from Saudi Arabia, Allison insisted Mom was sleeping.

Charles always backed her story.

Every holiday.

Every birthday.

Every video call that mysteriously "didn't work."

They had isolated my mother together.

The detective inserted the flash drive into his computer.

"There are audio files."

The first recording began.

Charles laughed.

"You've got to stop leaving bruises where people can see them."

Allison laughed with him.

"She bruises if someone breathes too hard."

"Still," Charles replied, "if Ryder comes home unexpectedly, we'll have a problem."

"He won't."

"His contract still has months left."

"What about the old woman?"

Allison's voice became colder than ice.

"I'm breaking her down."

"Once she signs everything over, she's useless."

Charles answered without hesitation.

"Then put her in a nursing home."

"No one will ask questions."

My stomach turned.

This wasn't neglect.

It wasn't abuse born from frustration.

It was a business plan.

Using my mother as the target.

Using me as the source of money.

The detective stopped the recording.

"We traced the transfers."

"There are more than just these payments."

He opened another document.

Life insurance.

My mother's policy had been increased six months earlier.

The beneficiary had changed.

Not me.

Not charity.

Not another relative.

Allison Dawson — 100%.

I stared at the page.

"Mom never signed this."

"She didn't."

The detective nodded.

"Our forensic examiner believes the signature was forged."

He looked directly into my eyes.

"Your wife wasn't waiting for your mother to die."

"She was preparing to profit from it."

I drove straight to the hospital.

Mom was awake.

She looked smaller than ever beneath the white blanket.

When she saw my face, she immediately knew.

"You found it."

I sat beside her bed.

"I found everything."

Tears rolled silently down her cheeks.

"I tried to tell you."

"I know."

"I didn't believe you."

She reached for my hand.

"No."

"You trusted your wife."

"I trusted the wrong person."

Mom looked toward the window.

"Your father warned me."

I frowned.

"What do you mean?"

"He never trusted Charles."

The words hit me harder than anything else that day.

"What?"

"He said Charles loved money too much."

"He told me never to put both boys on the house deed."

"I thought he was being unfair."

She closed her eyes.

"I was wrong."

That evening, Detective Morales called again.

"We searched Allison's office."

"Did you find anything?"

"We found a locked safe."

"And?"

"It wasn't full of jewelry."

"It contained passports."

"Three of them."

My blood ran cold.

"Three?"

"One belonged to Allison."

"The second belonged to Charles."

"And the third..."

He hesitated.

"...was issued in your mother's name."

I nearly dropped the phone.

"My mother has never owned a passport."

"Exactly."

There was only one reason to create a passport for a seventy-eight-year-old woman who could barely walk.

Someone had planned to make her disappear.
