CHAPTER 4 — The Envelope That Changed Everything

CHAPTER 4 — The Envelope That Changed Everything
I froze when I heard the name.
Dr. Benjamin Hayes.
Laurelai frowned.
"Who's Benjamin?"
I looked toward the front door before answering.
"A forensic accountant."
Her eyebrows shot up.
"A forensic accountant?"
"He used to work with Sterling Capital's outside legal team."
Years ago, Benjamin had quietly tried to warn me that the Sterling family's finances were far more complicated than they appeared. At the time, I had dismissed him. I believed my husband would never allow anything dishonest to happen.
I had been painfully naïve.
The receptionist's voice came through the intercom again.
"Ms. Vance? Should I send him up?"
I looked at the window.
Declan and his parents were still standing on the sidewalk.
"No."
A pause.
"I mean... send Dr. Hayes up. No one else."
"Yes, ma'am."
Five minutes later, there was a knock.
When I opened the door, Benjamin looked older than I remembered.
His navy suit was neatly pressed, but exhaustion lined his face. He carried a slim leather briefcase tucked tightly beneath one arm.
"Ara."
"It's been a long time."
He glanced past me toward the living room where Callie and Rowan were coloring together.
"They're beautiful."
I smiled.
"They're my whole world."
His expression softened before becoming serious again.
"I wouldn't have come if it weren't important."
I stepped aside.
"Come in."
Benjamin declined the coffee Laurelai offered.
Instead, he placed a thick manila envelope on the dining table.
"I resigned from Sterling Capital two days ago."
That caught my attention.
"You resigned?"
"I couldn't stay after what I learned."
He slid the envelope toward me.
"You need to read this."
Inside were copies of trust documents, corporate filings, and several notarized amendments.
My pulse quickened as I scanned the first page.
Sterling Family Legacy Trust.
The same trust Arthur had mentioned.
Benjamin pointed to a highlighted paragraph.
"Read the beneficiary clause."
I did.
The trust provided equal shares for all legitimate biological descendants of the Sterling bloodline.
"So?"
He handed me another document.
"This amendment was added eighteen months ago."
I compared the signatures.
Arthur.
Declan.
Eleanor.
The amendment removed one beneficiary.
Rowan Sterling.
My vision blurred.
"He was never added," I whispered.
Benjamin shook his head.
"No."
"He was."
I looked up.
"What?"
"He was added the week he was born."
My heart pounded.
"Then why did Arthur say—"
"Because he doesn't know this amendment exists."
Laurelai leaned over the table.
"Wait... you're saying someone secretly removed Rowan?"
Benjamin nodded.
"Yes."
The room fell silent.
Only the sound of Rowan pushing toy dinosaurs across the floor broke the stillness.
I stared at the signature authorizing the amendment.
It wasn't Arthur's.
It wasn't Declan's.
It wasn't even Eleanor's.
It was signed under a power of attorney granted during Arthur's heart surgery.
One name appeared beneath it.
Gregory Whitmore.
I frowned.
"I've never heard of him."
"You wouldn't have."
"He was the Sterling family's chief legal counsel."
Benjamin's voice grew colder.
"And Eleanor trusted him completely."
"Why would he remove Rowan?" Laurelai asked.
Benjamin hesitated.
"Because someone paid him to."
Every muscle in my body tensed.
"Who?"
"I don't know."
"But I know something else."
He pulled out another folder.
"Three months after Rowan's name disappeared from the trust..."
"...Gregory purchased a beach house in Malibu."
I stared at him.
"Cash."
At that exact moment, my phone vibrated.
Declan.
Again.
This time, I answered.
"What?"
His voice sounded frantic.
"Ara... where are you?"
"Home."
"I need to tell you something."
"So do I."
He paused.
"What?"
"I know about Rowan."
His breathing stopped.
"You... what?"
"I know someone removed him from the trust."
Silence.
Then—
"What trust?"
I closed my eyes.
He really hadn't known.
"You signed documents without reading them."
"Ara, I swear I don't know what you're talking about."
"I believe you."
Another silence.
Then he whispered,
"Who did this?"
"I think that's what we're about to find out."
Benjamin motioned for me to put the call on speaker.
I did.
"Declan," Benjamin said calmly.
There was a stunned pause.
"...Dr. Hayes?"
"Yes."
"I thought you left California."
"I did."
"Why are you with Ara?"
"Because someone manipulated your family's legal records."
The line went completely quiet.
Finally Declan spoke.
"Is this about Sarah?"
"No."
"It's much worse."
Benjamin opened the final folder.
Inside were bank transfers.
Corporate shell companies.
Wire receipts.
One transaction was circled in red.
A payment of $2.5 million.
Sent to Gregory Whitmore's private account.
The sender's name made my stomach tighten.
Evercrest Medical Holdings.
"I've never heard of them," I said.
Benjamin nodded.
"Most people haven't."
"They own private fertility clinics throughout California."
Laurelai looked confused.
"What does that have to do with Rowan?"
Benjamin took a slow breath.
"I don't know yet."
"But I know this."
He looked directly at me.
"Every suspicious payment began shortly after your second pregnancy."
A knock sounded on the apartment door.
Three sharp knocks.
Everyone looked up.
"I didn't buzz anyone else in," I said.
Another knock.
Then a calm male voice.
"Federal Bureau of Investigation."
My blood ran cold.
"We need to speak with Dr. Benjamin Hayes."
Benjamin closed his eyes.
"They found me."
"What do you mean?"
Before he could answer, the voice came again.
"Dr. Hayes, we have a warrant."
Benjamin looked at me with an expression I had never seen before.
Fear.
Real fear.
Then he quietly slid a small flash drive across the table.
"If they take me..."
"...don't let anyone else have this."
"What is it?"
"It contains the one document everyone in California is trying to destroy."
Outside the apartment, the knocking grew louder.
And before I could ask another question, Benjamin whispered seven words that made my entire world tilt.
May you like
"They've been lying about more than the trust."
