CHAPTER 2 — The Call That Changed Everything

CHAPTER 2 — The Call That Changed Everything
I stared at Eleanor's message until the screen dimmed.
Ara, come back immediately. Something terrible has happened.
For five years, that woman had never called me by my name without sounding as though it were an inconvenience.
Now she was begging.
I locked my phone.
"No."
The word came out so quietly I barely heard it myself.
Behind me, inside the apartment, Rowan stirred in his sleep.
"Mommy..."
I walked back inside immediately.
"I'm here, sweetheart."
His tiny fingers found mine before he drifted back to sleep.
That was my answer.
For years I had abandoned my own peace every time the Sterling family demanded something. Birthday dinners. Charity galas. Business functions. Family vacations where I was expected to smile while Eleanor criticized my clothes, my cooking, my parenting, even the way I laughed.
Not anymore.
The phone rang again.
Laurelai.
"You didn't answer Eleanor?"
"No."
"You probably should hear what's happening."
I leaned against the kitchen counter while she spoke.
"The hospital is in complete chaos."
"What do you mean?"
"The doula noticed something strange while documenting family medical history. Apparently Declan casually mentioned he's O-negative."
"So?"
"So is Arthur."
I frowned.
"And?"
"And Sarah's chart lists her as AB-positive."
I suddenly understood.
"Laurelai..."
"The baby's blood test came back B-positive."
Silence.
"That's... possible, isn't it?" I asked carefully.
"Barely. The doula wasn't accusing anyone. She simply said the genetics deserved another look because the combination didn't make sense based on what everyone claimed."
"And Declan lost it?"
"He demanded immediate DNA testing."
I closed my eyes.
This wasn't about blood types.
It was about trust.
Or rather—
the complete lack of it.
Laurelai continued.
"Apparently Sarah refused."
"Refused?"
"She said Declan should trust her."
I laughed.
A bitter laugh.
Trust.
The same man who had accused me of manipulating him every time I disagreed with his mother...
...was now demanding scientific proof from the woman he'd thrown away his marriage for.
Life had a cruel sense of humor.
Another message appeared.
Eleanor: Please answer.
Another.
Arthur is asking for you.
Then another.
This affects your children too.
That one made me pause.
My children?
I called.
Eleanor answered before the first ring finished.
"Ara!"
Her voice cracked.
Not elegant.
Not controlled.
Terrified.
"I need you to come back."
"No."
"You don't understand."
"I understand perfectly."
"Ara, please."
The word please sounded foreign coming from her.
"The baby's DNA..."
"I don't care."
"You have to care."
"My children are asleep."
"This concerns their inheritance."
"There it is."
Silence.
Finally.
The truth.
"You always knew," I said softly.
"Knew what?"
"That money was the only language your family spoke."
"Ara—"
"You disowned Callie and Rowan months before the divorce."
"It wasn't like that."
"Really?"
I remembered every family dinner.
Every Christmas.
Every birthday.
Every time Eleanor introduced Sarah to guests as "the future of the Sterling family."
Even before the divorce had been finalized.
Even while I was still wearing my wedding ring.
Eleanor's breathing became uneven.
"The DNA results came back."
"And?"
"It isn't Declan's."
I wasn't surprised.
Not because I knew Sarah had cheated.
Because I knew certainty when I heard it.
Sarah had refused the test because she already knew the answer.
"Who's the father?"
"We don't know."
I waited.
Then Eleanor whispered something that stunned even me.
"Neither does Sarah."
For several seconds, I forgot to breathe.
"What?"
"She admitted... there may have been someone else."
"May have?"
"Before she realized she was pregnant."
The apartment suddenly felt very quiet.
Somewhere outside, a subway rumbled through the night.
Inside, Callie turned over in bed.
Life continued.
Even when worlds collapsed.
"Declan fainted."
I blinked.
"He what?"
"He collapsed in the maternity ward."
Images flashed through my mind.
The confident businessman.
The polished executive.
The man who had looked me in the eyes this morning and calmly erased our children from his life.
Now lying unconscious on a hospital floor.
Because the fantasy he'd sacrificed everything for had shattered in less than an hour.
"Ara..."
Eleanor's voice broke again.
"Can you forgive us?"
"No."
The answer came effortlessly.
"I haven't even started healing."
She cried.
Actually cried.
For years I had imagined this moment.
Thought it would feel satisfying.
Victorious.
Instead...
I felt nothing.
Absolutely nothing.
Because revenge doesn't heal betrayal.
Distance does.
After hanging up, I walked to the children's bedroom.
Moonlight spilled across Callie's face.
Her drawing from the airport still rested beside her pillow.
Daddy.
Mommy.
Me.
Rowan.
She had drawn all four of us holding hands.
Even after everything.
Children loved without conditions.
Adults made love conditional all the time.
I carefully folded the picture and placed it inside my purse.
One day she would ask why her father stopped calling.
One day Rowan would wonder why his grandparents forgot his birthday.
When that day came...
I would tell them the truth.
Not the ugly version filled with hatred.
The honest one.
Some people confuse love with convenience.
And when convenience disappears...
So do they.
At 2:17 a.m., another notification lit my phone.
This one wasn't from Eleanor.
It was from Declan.
Just three words.
Please answer me.
Five minutes later another arrived.
I made a mistake.
Then another.
Please come home.
I looked around the apartment.
Callie's tiny shoes sat beside the couch.
Rowan's stuffed dinosaur lay upside down on the rug.
A half-unpacked box held picture frames waiting to become part of our new life.
I smiled.
Then I blocked Declan's number.
For the second time that day...
I chose my children.
Not the Sterling family.
Not their fortune.
Not their chaos.
Us.
Thousands of miles away, Declan Sterling was finally learning the price of replacing one family with another.
And he still had no idea...
May you like
the biggest secret hadn't even been uncovered yet.
