CHAPTER 5 — THE LITTLE GIRL WHO STOPPED A WAR

CHAPTER 5 — THE LITTLE GIRL WHO STOPPED A WAR
The first explosion shook the windows before the Moretti convoy reached the restaurant.
A delivery van parked across the street erupted into flames, sending black smoke rolling over the block. Neighbors screamed and fled inside their apartments. Car alarms wailed in every direction.
Marco dragged Amelia and Sophie behind the restaurant's concrete serving counter.
"Stay down!"
Sophie buried her face against her mother's shoulder.
"Mommy... are those fireworks?"
Amelia forced a smile despite trembling from head to toe.
"Yes, sweetheart."
Marco knew better.
The explosion wasn't meant to kill.
It was meant to create confusion.
Someone wanted the restaurant surrounded before Luca arrived.
Outside, masked men spread through the smoke.
Not shooting.
Searching.
"They're looking for the girl," Marco muttered into his radio.
His answer came instantly.
"They're not ours."
Another voice broke in.
"Boss is two minutes away."
Marco checked the back exit.
"Too long."
Across Brooklyn, Luca's convoy ignored every traffic light.
The black SUVs stormed through intersections like a military column.
Inside the lead vehicle, Luca stared at the handwritten note Connie had returned with his wallet.
Thank you for reminding me I'm still someone's grandfather.
He folded it carefully.
Then looked at the photograph of Matteo.
Seven years old.
Missing for eighty-three days.
Every lead had ended in blood.
Every witness had lied.
Until today.
Today someone claimed Matteo was alive.
And within hours...
Someone attacked the only child who had shown Luca kindness.
Coincidence?
He no longer believed in coincidence.
"They're sending a message," Marco's voice came through the speaker.
Luca answered calmly.
"No."
"They're making a mistake."

Inside Russo's Kitchen, the shooting suddenly stopped.
The silence felt even worse.
Connie whispered,
"Did they leave?"
Marco slowly shook his head.
"They're waiting."
"For what?"
He didn't answer.
Because he already knew.
Footsteps approached the front entrance.
Slow.
Confident.
One man.
The restaurant door creaked open.
A tall man in a gray suit stepped inside, carrying no visible weapon.
He smiled politely.
"Good evening."
Marco immediately recognized him.
His expression darkened.
"Victor Romano."
The newcomer nodded.
"It's been a long time."
Connie looked between them.
"You know each other?"
Marco never took his eyes off Victor.
"I wish I didn't."
Victor's smile widened.
"I'm not here to fight."
"No?"
"I'm here for the child."
Amelia instinctively pulled Sophie behind her.
Victor raised both hands peacefully.
"You misunderstand."
He looked directly at Sophie.
"Your kindness today changed something."
Nobody spoke.
Victor continued.
"Luca Moretti has been impossible to predict for twenty years."
"But today..."
"...he smiled."
The room fell silent.
Victor sighed.
"That makes you more dangerous than every soldier he has."
Before Marco could respond...
The front windows shattered again.
Not from bullets.
From armored SUVs smashing through parked cars outside.
The Morettis had arrived.
Within seconds, dozens of armed guards surrounded the building.
Luca stepped through the broken doorway.
His black suit was dusted with shattered glass.
His face revealed nothing.
Victor chuckled softly.
"I wondered how long."
Luca spoke only four words.
"Leave the child alone."
Victor tilted his head.
"You've changed."
"No."
"You have."
Victor pointed toward Sophie.
"She reminded you you're human."
The sentence landed like a punch.
Because it was true.
Luca had spent decades becoming someone incapable of mercy.
Yet one six-year-old had broken through walls built over forty years.
Victor smiled sadly.
"That's why they'll use her."
Luca's eyes narrowed.
"Who?"
May you like
Victor's smile disappeared.
"The people who took Matteo."
