CHAPTER 4 — THE PRICE ON A CHILD'S KINDNESS

CHAPTER 4 — THE PRICE ON A CHILD'S KINDNESS

That night, Brooklyn never truly went to sleep.

Police sirens echoed through the borough.

Helicopters circled overhead.

Rumors spread from barber shops to bakeries, from taxi drivers to bartenders.

Someone had crossed Luca Moretti.

The city held its breath.

At Russo's Kitchen, Connie locked the front door an hour earlier than usual.

The wallet remained on the counter.

"We have to return it," she said.

Amelia wasn't convinced.

"To him?"

"Yes."

"You know who he is."

"I know exactly who he is."

Connie lowered her voice.

"And I also know what kind of man searches for a kidnapped grandson."

Amelia looked at Sophie, already asleep in a booth with her stuffed rabbit tucked beneath one arm.

"I don't want my daughter anywhere near that world."

Neither did Connie.

But fate rarely asked permission.

At exactly 11:47 p.m., headlights swept across the restaurant windows.

Three black SUVs stopped outside.

Amelia's heart nearly stopped.

"They're here."

The restaurant door opened slowly.

Marco entered first.

Unlike earlier, he came alone.

No weapon in his hands.

Only quiet respect.

"Good evening."

Connie held up the wallet.

"I believe your boss dropped this."

Marco accepted it with both hands.

"You've saved us a great deal of trouble."

He reached into his pocket.

Connie immediately raised one finger.

"No money."

Marco almost smiled.

"I wasn't going to offer money."

Instead...

He removed a small silver envelope.

"Our boss insists."

Inside was not cash.

It was a handwritten note.

Only one sentence.

Thank you for reminding me I'm still someone's grandfather.

Amelia read it twice.

Then a third time.

The words didn't sound like they belonged to the man everyone feared.

Just then...

Every light inside the restaurant suddenly went dark.

The refrigerators stopped humming.

The streetlights outside flickered.

Power outage.

Connie frowned.

"That's strange."

Marco's expression changed instantly.

His hand moved beneath his jacket.

"Get down."

"What?"

"NOW!"

The front window exploded inward.

Glass rained across the dining room.

A masked gunman fired three rapid shots before anyone understood what was happening.

Customers screamed.

Sophie woke with a cry.

Marco threw himself across Amelia and the child as bullets shattered coffee mugs behind the counter.

Outside...

More gunfire erupted.

The quiet Brooklyn street transformed into a battlefield.

Marco spoke into his hidden microphone.

"Boss!"

"They found the restaurant."

"They're after the little girl."

Silence answered him for half a second.

Then Luca's voice came through, colder than death itself.

"Touch one hair on Sophie's head..."

"...and there won't be enough of the Romano family left to bury."

Outside...

Dozens of black SUVs roared toward Russo's Kitchen.

The war that New York had feared for two decades...

...had just begun.

And neither Sophie nor her mother yet understood the terrifying truth.

The spaghetti had never been the real gift.

May you like

The real gift...

...was that the most dangerous man in New York had decided that protecting one little girl now mattered as much as protecting his own family.
