CHAPTER 2 — The Folder That Changed Everything

CHAPTER 2 — The Folder That Changed Everything
The man in the charcoal suit stopped a few feet away from us, his polished shoes gleaming against the airport floor.
"Mr. Frost," he said calmly. "The documents are ready."
Desmond never took his eyes off me.
"What documents?"
The attorney hesitated before handing him the thick legal folder.
"Per your fiancée's request."
Katherine's perfectly painted lips curled into a smile.
"I thought it would save everyone time."
Every instinct in my body screamed.
The triplets gathered around my legs, sensing the tension.
Oliver reached for my hand.
"Mommy?"
I squeezed his tiny fingers.
"It's okay."
But it wasn't.
Not even close.
Desmond opened the folder.
His face changed with every page.
"What the hell is this?"
Katherine answered before the lawyer could.
"Emergency custody petition."
Silence exploded around us.
"You abandoned these children," she continued smoothly. "You clearly aren't capable of raising them alone."
I stared at her.
"You've never even met them."
She ignored me.
"Mr. Frost is their biological father. As his future wife, I simply want what's best for the Frost family."
Desmond slowly looked up.
"I never authorized this."
Her smile faltered.
"You...what?"
"I said," he repeated, louder this time, "I never authorized any custody filing."
The attorney cleared his throat.
"Miss Sterling instructed our office that you had approved the action verbally."
"I did no such thing."
Passengers walking by began slowing down.
People were watching.
Katherine's confidence cracked for the first time.
"Desmond...we discussed this."
"No," he replied coldly. "You discussed it. I barely knew these children existed five minutes ago."
She stepped closer.
"You don't understand."
"I understand perfectly."
He closed the folder with a loud snap.
"You investigated Maya."
"You tracked her."
"You found her pawn records."
"You had our flights manipulated."
"And now you're trying to take three babies away from the only parent who's ever cared for them."
Her eyes flashed.
"I did it for us."
"For our future."
"For your company."
I frowned.
"My company?"
Desmond looked equally confused.
"What does my company have to do with this?"
Katherine laughed quietly.
"You still don't see it?"
She pointed toward the children.
"The Frost Board has been pressuring you for an heir."
"Your grandfather's trust releases nearly four hundred million dollars only after a legitimate blood descendant is legally recognized."
The entire terminal suddenly felt smaller.
Desmond froze.
Even his attorney looked shocked.
"You read my private trust documents?"
"I helped draft them."
The realization hit him like a train.
"You planned this."
She smiled again.
"If I became the legal guardian of your heirs before our wedding..."
"...the fortune would remain under our control."
My stomach twisted.
This had never been about family.
Never about love.
My children were assets.
Nothing more.
Oliver tugged on my sleeve.
"Mommy...why is that lady talking about us?"
I knelt immediately.
"Don't worry, sweetheart."
But my voice shook.
Because I had never been more afraid.
Desmond suddenly stepped between Katherine and the children.
"Back away from them."
She blinked.
"You can't be serious."
"I'm completely serious."
"You don't even know their names."
"No," he admitted quietly.
"But I know they're innocent."
"And I know you're frightening them."
Airport security noticed the growing crowd.
Two officers began walking toward us.
Katherine smiled as though everything was unfolding exactly as planned.
"Perfect."
She reached into her designer handbag.
"I was hoping witnesses would be here."
She produced another envelope.
Then handed it directly to one of the officers.
"I need to report a kidnapping."
Every sound around me disappeared.
The officer looked confused.
"Ma'am?"
"Those children," Katherine said, pointing directly at my babies, "are being illegally hidden from their biological father."
I felt the blood drain from my face.
Desmond turned sharply.
"What are you doing?"
"I'm protecting your heirs."
The officer looked at me.
"Ma'am, we'll need identification."
With trembling hands, I reached into the diaper bag.
Empty.
I searched again.
Nothing.
My passport.
The children's birth certificates.
Every document.
Gone.
Someone had stolen the entire envelope.
My breathing stopped.
Katherine slowly folded her arms.
"That's unfortunate."
Then she looked directly into my eyes.
"Without proof of identity..."
"...how exactly are you planning to convince anyone those children belong with you?"
Before I could answer, Oliver suddenly pointed across the terminal.
"Mommy!"
"The man from our apartment!"
I turned.
Standing near a coffee shop was a tall man wearing a baseball cap.
The same maintenance worker who had been lingering outside my apartment building for weeks.
The same man I had caught taking pictures of the triplets through our living room window.
And in his hand—
was my missing document envelope.
The moment our eyes met...
he ran.
Desmond didn't hesitate.
"Stop him!"
But the stranger wasn't running toward the airport exit.
He was heading straight for a private security checkpoint marked:
AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL ONLY
As automatic doors slammed shut behind him, one terrifying thought echoed through my mind.
This operation had never been Katherine's idea alone.
Someone far more powerful had been planning this for months.
May you like
And whoever was waiting behind those doors...
already had my children's identities.
