CHAPTER 7 – The Truth Behind the Insult

CHAPTER 7 – The Truth Behind the Insult
Dana stared at her phone long after the call ended.
A message?
No.
That couldn't be possible.
Maria had been confused. She had wandered into Beatrice by accident.
Unless...
Eleanor Brooks agreed to meet Dana in a quiet coffee shop before sunrise.
She arrived carrying two thick folders.
"I've spent eighteen months investigating Senator Andrew Hale," Eleanor said. "Financial records. Shell companies. Illegal campaign donations. Witness intimidation."
Dana frowned.
"What does that have to do with Maria?"
Eleanor slid an old newspaper clipping across the table.
It showed a much younger Maria Moretti standing beside her late husband at a charity fundraiser nearly twenty-five years earlier.
Beatrice Hale was in the same photograph.
Smiling.
Standing only a few feet away.
Dana's heart skipped.
"They knew each other."
Eleanor nodded.
"More importantly... Beatrice knew Maria had begun suffering from memory loss."
Dana looked down at the photograph again.
"So she wasn't angry because of the wine."
"No."
Eleanor's voice hardened.
"She saw an elderly woman who couldn't defend herself."
"And she decided to make a spectacle of her."
"But why?"
Eleanor opened the second folder.
"Because Roman Moretti had quietly refused to cooperate with a business arrangement that would have benefited several politicians, including people connected to Senator Hale."
Dana looked stunned.
"You think Beatrice wanted to provoke Roman?"
"I think she believed Roman would lose control."
"If he exploded in public..."
"...every television station in America would replay it."
"But instead..."
Dana whispered.
"He knelt beside his mother."
Eleanor smiled.
"And that changed everything."
That same afternoon, Eleanor published her investigation.
Not speculation.
Evidence.
Bank transfers.
Emails.
Witness testimony.
The story spread faster than anyone expected.
Federal investigators announced they were reopening several dormant corruption cases involving Senator Hale's political network.
Within hours...
Major donors withdrew their support.
Three senior campaign advisers resigned.
The senator stood before dozens of cameras outside the Capitol.
"I had no knowledge of any illegal activities."
No one believed him.
Reporters shouted questions faster than he could answer them.
"Did your wife deliberately target Maria Moretti?"
"Were campaign funds used to silence witnesses?"
"Are you resigning?"
He walked away without responding.
The cameras followed.
Across the city...
Beatrice sat alone inside the enormous Hale mansion.
For the first time in years...
No one answered her calls.
Her social calendar disappeared overnight.
Friends stopped returning messages.
Luxury brands quietly canceled sponsorship agreements.
The silence inside the mansion was louder than any argument.
She finally understood something she had never considered.

Power borrowed from others could disappear overnight.
Character was the only thing that remained.
