CHAPTER 6 – A Mother Never Forgets

CHAPTER 6 – A Mother Never Forgets

The following morning...

Dana woke to loud knocking.

Not aggressive.

Urgent.

She opened the apartment door.

Her landlord stood there.

She braced herself.

"I'm trying," she began.

"I just lost—"

The landlord interrupted.

"I know."

He looked confused.

"Someone already paid."

Dana blinked.

"What?"

"Six months."

"In advance."

She stared.

"I... didn't."

"I know."

"He refused to leave a name."

Dana didn't need one.

Two hours later...

Caleb returned from the pharmacy carrying two full bags.

"Dana!"

His smile was enormous.

"They gave me everything!"

"My inhalers."

"My breathing machine."

"They even scheduled me with a specialist."

Dana hugged him tightly.

"So you can breathe easier now."

Caleb nodded happily.

"I forgot what that felt like."

Dana turned away before he could see the tears in her eyes.

At Moretti Manor, Maria sat in the garden, feeding birds.

Roman joined her with two cups of tea.

"You helped the girl."

Maria smiled.

"No."

"You did."

Roman looked toward the roses.

"I settled her debts."

Maria shook her head gently.

"That's not what I meant."

Roman frowned.

"You looked at her."

"You trusted her."

"You don't trust many people anymore."

Roman remained silent.

Maria reached for his hand.

"Do you know why I liked Dana?"

Roman smiled faintly.

"Because she reminded you of someone?"

"You."

Roman laughed quietly.

"I was never that kind."

"You were."

"When you were nine."

Maria's eyes became distant.

"You found a homeless man sleeping outside our church."

"You took him your winter coat."

"You came home freezing."

Roman hadn't thought about that day in decades.

"I'd forgotten."

"I hadn't."

Maria squeezed his hand.

"The world taught you how to become feared."

"But it never completely erased the boy who wanted strangers to be warm."

Roman looked away.

His mother always found the parts of him no one else could see.

Meanwhile...

Senator Hale's campaign headquarters descended into chaos.

Every television network replayed the gala footage.

Political analysts questioned his leadership.

Donors began canceling fundraisers.

Even members of his own party privately urged him to distance himself from Beatrice.

One advisor spoke carefully.

"Sir..."

"If Mrs. Hale issued a sincere public apology..."

Andrew looked toward the office window.

"She won't."

"And if she doesn't?"

The advisor hesitated.

"You may lose more than the election."

Andrew understood exactly what he meant.

For years, people had tolerated Beatrice because of power.

Now...

Power was slipping away.

And without it...

Only character remained.

That evening, as Dana prepared dinner in her tiny apartment, her phone rang.

The number was unfamiliar.

She answered cautiously.

"This is Dana."

A calm female voice replied.

"Miss Walsh..."

"My name is Eleanor Brooks."

"I'm an investigative journalist."

"I believe what happened at the gala..."

"...was only the beginning."

Dana frowned.

"What do you mean?"

There was a brief silence.

Then Eleanor spoke the words that changed everything.

"I've been investigating Senator Hale for eighteen months."

"I think his wife didn't humiliate Maria Moretti by accident."

"I think..."

"...she recognized exactly who Maria was."

Dana's blood ran cold.

"If you're right..."

Eleanor answered quietly,

"Then what happened at the gala wasn't cruelty."

May you like

"It was a message."

"And someone wanted Roman Moretti to receive it."
