CHAPTER 3 – THE VIDEO EVERYONE SAW

CHAPTER 3 – THE VIDEO EVERYONE SAW
The beach suddenly fell silent.
The woman turned slowly toward the security camera mounted beneath the roof of the cabana.
Her confidence disappeared.
"That camera doesn't work," she said, forcing a laugh.
The attendant didn't answer immediately.
Instead, he reached for the radio clipped to his belt.
"Control, this is Cabana Seven," he said. "Can you confirm Camera C-12 is recording?"
Static.
Then a voice crackled back.
"Recording continuously since 8:00 a.m."
The woman froze.
One of her friends whispered, "Emily... you told us there weren't any cameras."
Emily shot her a furious look.
"Be quiet."
Within minutes, the beach manager arrived with two security officers.
He introduced himself politely before turning to me.
"Sir, I understand there's a dispute over this cabana."
I handed him my confirmation email, photo ID, and the reservation receipt.
He compared the reservation number to the bracelet on my wrist.
Then he looked at Grandma's matching bracelet.
His expression tightened.
"This reservation belongs to this family."
Emily immediately interrupted.
"He's lying! That old woman wandered in here."
The manager held up a hand.
"We'll let the footage answer that."
The words hit Emily like a wave.
"No need," she said quickly. "This is just a misunderstanding."
"It didn't sound like a misunderstanding fifteen minutes ago," I replied.
The manager radioed the security office.
A portable tablet was brought over.
Within seconds, the recorded video began playing.
A crowd had already gathered.
Nobody spoke.
Everyone watched.
The footage showed Grandma sitting peacefully in the shade, smiling as she watched the ocean.
A minute later, Emily and her friends walked into the cabana carrying expensive beach bags and drinks.
Emily looked around.
She noticed Grandma was alone.
Then she smiled.
Not a friendly smile.
The kind that made my stomach turn.
She pointed at Grandma.
The video had no audio, but her body language was unmistakable.
She demanded Grandma leave.
Grandma politely held up her reservation bracelet.
Emily ripped the beach bag from beside Grandma's chair.
She threw it onto the sand.
Then another.
Then another.
Gasps spread through the crowd watching the tablet.
One elderly woman covered her mouth.
"Oh my God..."
The video continued.

Grandma slowly stood using her cane.
Emily snatched the cane from her hand.
Instead of handing it back...
...she tossed it several feet away into the sand.
Several people watching actually shouted in disbelief.
"What is wrong with her?"
The attendant appeared in the footage.
Emily pointed aggressively at Grandma while acting frightened.
The confused attendant looked at the bracelet but eventually believed Emily.
Grandma was escorted away.
Then came the moment that made the crowd furious.
As Grandma sat alone in the plastic chair...
Emily and all four of her friends laughed.
Not once.
Not twice.
Over and over.
The manager stopped the video.
The silence afterward was unbearable.
He slowly turned toward Emily.
"Do you have anything you'd like to explain?"
Emily's voice barely came out.
"I..."
One of her own friends stepped backward.
"I didn't know she pushed the old lady."
Another quickly added,
"She told us that woman was stealing the cabana."
A third friend grabbed her bag.
"I'm leaving."

Within thirty seconds...
Emily was standing completely alone.
