CHAPTER 10 – A BOY WITH NO PLACE TO GO

CHAPTER 10 – A BOY WITH NO PLACE TO GO

Winter arrived early.

Snow covered Chicago.

One evening, after closing, Anna noticed a teenage dishwasher lingering outside the restaurant.

He couldn't have been older than sixteen.

His coat was too thin.

His shoes were soaked.

"You missed your bus?"

The boy looked away.

"I don't have anywhere to go."

His name was Marcus.

His mother had died.

His father was in prison.

He had been sleeping behind grocery stores for weeks.

Anna immediately called Victor.

Twenty minutes later...

The black sedan arrived.

Victor stepped out.

The terrified teenager immediately recognized him.

"You..."

"...you're Victor Kane."

Victor smiled gently.

"So I've been told."

Marcus expected questions.

Instead Victor asked only one.

"Have you eaten?"

The boy burst into tears.

That night...

Marcus slept in the guest room of the Kane home.

Not because they intended to adopt him.

Because no child should sleep in freezing weather.

Weeks turned into months.

Victor helped him finish school.

Anna taught him how to cook.

How to budget.

How to believe compliments.

One evening Marcus asked quietly,

"Why are you helping me?"

Victor answered without hesitation.

"Because someone once helped me become a better man."

Marcus looked at Anna.

She smiled.

"And now it's your turn."

Years later...

Marcus graduated from college.

He declined offers from several corporations.

Instead...

He opened a culinary training program for homeless teenagers.

On opening day, he invited only two guests of honor.

May you like

Victor.

And Anna.
