CHAPTER 12 – THE TABLE THAT CHANGED A FAMILY

CHAPTER 12 – THE TABLE THAT CHANGED A FAMILY
Twenty-five years later...
The Imperial Room was busier than ever.
Generations had come and gone.
The restaurant had been renovated twice.
Menus had changed.
Chefs had retired.
Owners had changed hands.
Only one thing remained exactly the same.
The bronze plaque beside the entrance.
Every morning, new employees still read its words before beginning their shift.
Respect is not earned by wealth.
It is owed by humanity.
On a rainy Thursday evening, a young hostess hurried toward the manager.
"Sir... there's a problem."
The manager looked up.
"What happened?"
"Table twelve."
"A customer threw his wine at one of the servers."
The dining room fell unusually quiet.
Some guests looked away.
Others reached for their phones.
The young server stood frozen.
Red wine dripped from her white uniform.
She couldn't have been older than twenty.
The customer slammed his fist on the table.
"You expect me to eat this garbage?"
"I spend more money here in one night than she makes in a year!"
Before the manager could answer...
An elderly woman slowly stood from the corner table.
Silver hair.
Simple navy-blue coat.
Gentle eyes.
Anna Kane.
She walked toward the frightened server.
Without saying a word...
She removed her own cream-colored scarf and carefully wiped the young woman's face.
The server burst into tears.
Anna held her hand.
"It's all right."
"You did nothing wrong."
The customer scoffed.
"And who exactly are you?"
Before Anna could answer...
Several longtime employees stepped forward.
Then the chefs emerged from the kitchen.
The bartenders stopped working.
Dishwashers came to the doorway.
One by one...
Every employee stood beside Anna.
A silence spread across the restaurant.
Finally, the oldest waiter smiled.
"You must be new."
He pointed toward the plaque near the entrance.
"She isn't just a customer."
"She's the reason that plaque exists."
The man turned pale.
He slowly read the name engraved in bronze.
THE ANNA KANE STANDARD
His arrogance disappeared.
"I..."
"I'm sorry."
Anna looked at him calmly.
"Not to me."
She nodded toward the trembling server.
He hesitated.
Then stood.
Walked across the room.
And quietly said the words he had never imagined speaking.
"I'm sorry."
The young server nodded through her tears.
"I accept."
No applause followed.
No cameras flashed.
The restaurant simply returned to serving dinner.
Because dignity had once again been protected.
Exactly as it was meant to be.
That night...
The young server found a handwritten note inside her locker.
It read:
Never confuse someone's anger with your worth.
Protect your kindness.
It will carry you farther than fear ever can.May you like
— Anna
The note remained folded inside her wallet for the rest of her life.
