CHAPTER 8: THE CHOICE

CHAPTER 8: THE CHOICE

The monastery was collapsing.

Dust filled the air.

Ancient stones rained from above.

Bridget carried Annie toward the exit.

Halfway there, Annie looked back.

"Mom!"

Bridget turned.

Ryder had become trapped beneath a fallen stone beam.

His security team struggled to lift it.

Another section of the ceiling gave way.

There wasn't enough time.

"Go!" Ryder shouted.

"Take Annie!"

Bridget hesitated.

Annie squeezed her mother's hand.

"He saved us."

Without another word, Bridget ran back.

Together with two bodyguards, she pushed against the beam.

It refused to move.

Another crash echoed overhead.

The old Japanese leader, pinned beneath shattered columns, watched silently.

"This... is... your... chance..." he whispered.

"Leave him."

Bridget ignored him.

"Push!"

Everyone strained with everything they had.

The beam shifted.

Just enough.

Ryder pulled himself free.

"Run!"

The entire group sprinted through the red gate.

Seconds later...

The monastery collapsed into a cloud of stone and dust.

Silence followed.

The nightmare was over.

EPILOGUE: ONE YEAR LATER

The Fairmont Hotel ballroom looked very different.

The same chandeliers sparkled overhead.

The same marble floors gleamed.

But tonight, the guests weren't celebrating wealth.

They were honoring courage.

Bridget stood confidently on stage, no longer wearing a server's uniform.

She now directed the Annie Hope Foundation, an organization that helped single parents with emergency childcare so no mother would ever have to choose between earning a paycheck and protecting a child.

Annie, now eight years old, stood beside her wearing a simple blue dress.

She still possessed her extraordinary gift for languages, but her life had changed forever.

Instead of hiding her talent, she began studying linguistics under university professors who marveled at her remarkable ability.

Her gift would be used to build understanding—not fear.

At the front table sat Ryder Burke.

The criminal empire he had inherited had been dismantled piece by piece after the monastery raid. With evidence recovered from the syndicate's files and testimony from former associates, he had cooperated with authorities to destroy the network that had thrived in the shadows for decades.

His reputation would always be complicated, but his choices had changed.

When Annie finished her short thank-you speech, she walked down from the stage.

Ryder knelt to her height.

"You saved my life."

Annie smiled.

"My mom says saving people is contagious."

For the first time in many years, Ryder laughed.

Bridget joined them, taking Annie's hand.

"What happens now?" Annie asked.

Bridget looked around the room.

"Now..."

"...we get to live the life they tried to take from us."

The audience rose in a standing ovation.

Not for power.

Not for money.

But for the courage of a little girl who refused to stay hidden behind a curtain—and whose single act of bravery turned a night of murder into a future filled with hope.
