CHAPTER 4: THE MAFIA SAFE HOUSE

CHAPTER 4: THE MAFIA SAFE HOUSE
Annie woke to darkness.
Her wrists weren't tied.
Her ankles weren't chained.
That frightened her more.
Someone believed she couldn't escape.
She slowly opened her eyes.
The room was enormous.
Concrete walls.
One steel door.
One small window covered by iron bars.
A single lamp hung from the ceiling.
Across the room sat the elderly Japanese man she had never seen leave the ballroom.
The leader.
He calmly poured himself green tea.
"You are awake."
His English was flawless.
Annie didn't answer.
He smiled.
"You understood every word we spoke tonight."
Silence.
"You hear Japanese."
Silence.
"You understand it."
Still nothing.
The old man nodded approvingly.
"Smart."
He placed several photographs on the table.
Bridget.
Leaving work.
Buying groceries.
Walking Annie to school.
Another picture.
Their apartment building.
Another.
The overdue rent notice taped to their mailbox.
"We know everything."
Annie felt tears sting her eyes.
"What do you want?"
The old man folded his hands.
"You."
"You possess something my employers will pay billions to control."
"I don't have anything."
"You have ears unlike any intelligence agency."
He leaned forward.
"You can erase language barriers."
"You can expose negotiations."
"You can uncover secrets."
He smiled gently.
"You are more valuable than diamonds."
Meanwhile...
Twenty miles away...
Bridget refused medical treatment.
"My daughter is out there!"
Police officers tried to calm her.
"We're doing everything we can."
"No!"
She broke down completely.
"You don't understand!"
Ryder Burke watched from across the room.
He had seen mothers cry before.
Most eventually accepted reality.
Bridget didn't.
She still believed Annie was alive.
So did Ryder.
Because if the assassins wanted Annie dead...
They would have killed her inside the ballroom.
Instead...
They had taken her.
Which meant she still had value.
And valuable people stayed alive.
For now.
Ryder entered the command room inside one of his private buildings.
Dozens of monitors displayed traffic cameras across San Francisco.
His security director looked exhausted.
"No ransom."
"No demands."
"No sightings."
Ryder stared at the screen showing Annie smiling beside her mother from hotel security footage taken earlier that evening.
"Who are they?"
The director answered quietly.
"The Tanaka Syndicate."
Ryder didn't blink.
One of the oldest criminal organizations in the Pacific.
Not merely assassins.
Empire builders.
Human traffickers.
Political manipulators.
Corporate infiltrators.
If they wanted Annie...
They would never stop.
Back inside the concrete room...
The old man slid one final photograph across the table.
Annie gasped.
It showed Bridget.
Walking alone.
Completely unaware.
The old man's voice remained calm.
"Tomorrow..."
"...your mother dies."
Annie's heart stopped.
"Unless..."
May you like
He smiled.
"...you agree to work for us."
