Chapter 2 – The Truth Hidden in the Bottles

Marcus slowly lowered the eye-drop bottle.

Sophia stood motionless in the hallway.

The dim light from the bathroom cast long shadows across her face.

For a few seconds, neither of them spoke.

Then she smiled.

"What are you doing awake?"

Her voice sounded normal.

Too normal.

Marcus forced himself to stay calm.

"Couldn't sleep."

Sophia glanced at the bottle in his hand.

And for the briefest moment—

her smile disappeared.

It lasted less than a second.

But Marcus saw it.

Fear.

Pure fear.

Then it was gone.

"You should get some rest," she said.

"We both have a long day tomorrow."

She turned and walked away.

Slowly.

Without rushing.

Without looking back.

But Marcus noticed something strange.

Her hands were trembling.

The next morning, Marcus made a decision.

He trusted no one.

Not the doctors.

Not the nurses.

Not even family.

He quietly placed the suspicious bottles into a sealed bag and drove across the city.

Not to a hospital.

Not to one of the laboratories connected to his company.

Somewhere nobody knew.

A private forensic laboratory run by a former government investigator.

A man named Dr. Kofi Mensah.

If anyone could uncover the truth, it was him.

Three hours later, Marcus sat inside the laboratory office.

The waiting was torture.

Every minute felt like an hour.

Finally, Dr. Mensah entered carrying a folder.

His face looked grim.

Very grim.

Marcus immediately stood.

"What did you find?"

The doctor placed the folder on the desk.

Then took a deep breath.

"The medication isn't what the label says it is."

Marcus felt the room tilt.

"What?"

"The bottles were professionally altered."

His stomach dropped.

"Altered how?"

The doctor opened the report.

Several pages of chemical analysis appeared.

"The original medication was removed."

Marcus stared.

"And replaced with another compound."

His heart pounded.

"What kind of compound?"

The doctor hesitated.

Then answered.

"A substance capable of damaging the optic nerve over time."

Silence.

Marcus couldn't breathe.

The words echoed in his head.

Damaging the optic nerve.

Not treating it.

Destroying it.

Whoever had done this wasn't helping Lila.

They were making her blind.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

For months.

Marcus left the laboratory in a daze.

His hands gripped the steering wheel so tightly his knuckles turned white.

Every traffic light.

Every passing car.

Every second.

His mind replayed one horrifying question.

Who would do this to a child?

And why?

That evening he reviewed security footage from the mansion.

Weeks of recordings.

Hundreds of hours.

Nothing unusual.

Nothing suspicious.

Then something caught his eye.

A timestamp from six weeks earlier.

2:13 a.m.

The hallway outside Lila's room.

Someone entered.

A woman.

Marcus leaned closer.

Sophia.

His pulse exploded.

He watched as she quietly walked into Lila's bathroom.

Three minutes later she emerged carrying something small.

A bottle.

An eye-drop bottle.

Marcus felt physically sick.

His own sister-in-law.

The woman Lila trusted.

The woman who tucked her into bed.

The woman who comforted her after medical appointments.

She had access.

Opportunity.

And now...

apparently evidence.

Marcus immediately called his security chief.

"Get Sophia here. Now."

Within minutes, security guards located her in the library.

She arrived visibly nervous.

Then she saw the paused security footage.

And everything changed.

Her face drained of color.

"No..."

Marcus slammed his hand against the desk.

"Tell me why!"

Tears instantly filled her eyes.

"You don't understand."

"Then explain it!"

"I was trying to help her!"

The room went silent.

Marcus stared.

"What?"

Sophia was crying now.

Shaking.

Terrified.

"I switched the bottles."

Marcus froze.

His anger faltered.

"You what?"

"I switched them."

The words didn't make sense.

"You switched them?"

Sophia nodded desperately.

"I found out someone was tampering with her medication."

The room fell silent.

Marcus blinked.

"What?"

"I wasn't poisoning Lila."

She pointed at the screen.

"I was replacing the poisoned bottles."

Marcus felt the blood leave his face.

For several seconds he couldn't speak.

Because suddenly everything he'd assumed collapsed.

The footage wasn't evidence of guilt.

It was evidence of something else.

Something far worse.

Someone else had poisoned the medication first.

Sophia had discovered it.

And secretly tried to stop it.

Marcus slowly sat down.

"Then who?"

Sophia's tears continued.

"I didn't know."

"You must know something."

She hesitated.

Then whispered:

"I only saw one person near the medication cabinet."

Marcus leaned forward.

His heart hammering.

"Who?"

Sophia looked at him with absolute horror.

Then spoke the name.

The name that shattered his world.

"Dr. Aaron Blake."

Marcus froze.

Lila's lead specialist.

The doctor who diagnosed her.

The doctor who prescribed every treatment.

The doctor who convinced Marcus the disease was incurable.

The doctor who earned millions overseeing her care.

The doctor Marcus trusted completely.

"No..."

Sophia nodded.

"I saw him inside the house when nobody else was here."

Marcus shook his head.

"That's impossible."

But deep down...

he already knew it wasn't.

Then Sophia revealed the final piece.

The secret she'd been terrified to share.

"There's something else."

Marcus looked up.

"What?"

Sophia swallowed hard.

"Ama didn't disappear."

Marcus's heart nearly stopped.

The nurse.

The homeless boy's mother.

The woman everyone believed had vanished.

Sophia's voice broke.

"She called me three days ago."

The room went dead silent.

Marcus stood up so quickly his chair crashed backward.

"What?"

Sophia's hands trembled.

"She's alive."

Marcus stared.

Unable to process the words.

Then came the twist that changed everything.

Sophia whispered:

"Ama says Lila was never sick."

The room froze.

"What?"

"She says every diagnosis was fabricated."

Marcus felt the world spinning.

"No."

Sophia nodded.

Tears streamed down her face.

"According to Ama..."

Her voice dropped to a whisper.

"...the real target was never Lila."

Marcus's pulse thundered in his ears.

"Then who was?"

Sophia looked directly at him.

And answered the one thing he never expected.

"You."

Marcus stopped breathing.

Because suddenly the pieces fit together.

The illness.

The treatments.

The fake diagnosis.

The disappearing nurse.

The poisoned medication.

The trusted doctor.

The financial empire.

Someone wasn't trying to destroy his daughter.

Someone was using his daughter...

May you like

to destroy him.
