Chapter 3: The Hospital Report That Changed Everything

Chapter 3: The Hospital Report That Changed Everything

The emergency room doors slid open before I even reached them.

"My daughter's been exposed to solvent-based paint!" I shouted. "It got in her eyes!"

Within seconds, two nurses rushed Lily onto a pediatric gurney.

"Sweetheart, keep your eyes closed for us."

"It hurts," Lily cried, clutching my hand so tightly her tiny fingernails dug into my skin.

"I know, baby. Mommy's right here."

A doctor hurried over while another nurse began flushing Lily's eyes with sterile saline.

"What exactly was the product?"

"I... I don't know."

I held up my phone with the only picture I'd managed to snap of the bucket before leaving.

The doctor's expression hardened.

"That's not craft paint."

He zoomed in on the faded label.

"Industrial enamel primer."

My stomach lurched.

"It contains chemical solvents."

"Is she going to be okay?"

"We won't know until we've completely irrigated her eyes."

For nearly forty-five agonizing minutes, Lily lay perfectly still while nurses continuously flushed both eyes.

She never complained.

She simply cried in silence.

Every tear felt like another knife twisting inside my chest.

When the examination finally ended, the doctor pulled me into a quiet consultation room.

"The good news is we flushed the chemicals quickly."

I exhaled for what felt like the first time in an hour.

"The bad news?"

"There are superficial chemical burns to both corneas."

Everything around me seemed to disappear.

"...Burns?"

"They appear mild, but she'll need medication, follow-up visits, and we have to monitor her vision very carefully."

I covered my face.

"Oh God..."

"This could have been much worse."

He paused before asking the question I had been dreading.

"How did this happen?"

I hesitated.

Then I told him everything.

Every word.

The prank.

The livestream.

The cheering.

The bucket.

The laughter.

The phone.

The doctor didn't interrupt once.

When I finished, he slowly removed his glasses.

"Your sister livestreamed this?"

"Yes."

"And multiple adults watched?"

"Yes."

"No one stopped her?"

I shook my head.

He was silent for several seconds.

Finally he said quietly,

"I'm required to notify hospital social services."

My head snapped up.

"What?"

"This isn't about you."

His tone was gentle.

"This involves potential child endangerment."

"I understand."

"They'll likely notify law enforcement as well."

I nodded.

"I want a report."

He studied me carefully.

"You understand what that means?"

"It means someone finally writes down what actually happened."

Two hours later, a police officer arrived.

Officer Daniel Ruiz.

Kind eyes.

Calm voice.

Notebook already open.

He crouched beside Lily first.

"Hi, sweetheart."

She barely whispered.

"Hi."

"I'm not here to scare you."

He handed her a small stuffed puppy from his patrol car.

"I just need to know one thing."

He waited patiently.

"Did anyone make you stand under the bucket?"

Lily nodded.

"Aunt Vanessa."

"Did you want to?"

"No."

"Did you tell her no?"

Tiny tears filled her eyes again.

"I said please."

Officer Ruiz closed his notebook for a moment.

He looked away before speaking again.

"Thank you."

Then he interviewed me.

I showed him the photographs.

The bucket.

The warning labels.

Lily covered in paint.

The stained white dress folded inside a hospital bag.

He photographed everything.

"Do you know whether the livestream was saved?"

"I don't know."

"We'll find out."

He wrote one final sentence.

"I strongly recommend you preserve every message your family sends tonight."

I frowned.

"Why?"

"Because people who know they're in trouble..."

He looked directly at me.

"...often create evidence without realizing it."

He was right.

My phone buzzed before he even finished speaking.

Mom

"You humiliated this family."

Another message.

"You better not tell anyone what really happened."

Another.

"Vanessa didn't mean it."

Then Dad.

"You're blowing this out of proportion."

"You owe your sister $1,500."

"If police contact us, remember YOU attacked her first."

Then Vanessa.

Voice message.

Laughing.

Actually laughing.

"You seriously ran to the hospital? You're unbelievable."

Another.

"My followers think you're psycho."

Another.

"I'm posting the security video of you smashing my phone."

Then...

A notification from Facebook.

You have been tagged in a video.

My hands began shaking.

Vanessa had already uploaded it.

The clip started exactly where I slapped the phone away.

Not before.

Not the paint.

Not Lily screaming.

Only me.

Looking furious.

Knocking the phone across the patio.

Caption:

"My unstable sister assaulted me because she couldn't take a joke. Should I press charges?"

The views climbed so quickly I could actually watch the numbers increase.

5,000...

11,000...

26,000...

People flooded the comments.

She belongs in jail.

Pay for the phone!

Poor influencer.

Crazy Karen mom.

None of them knew the truth.

Because Vanessa had made sure they never saw it.

Just before midnight, another notification appeared.

This time from my mother.

Not a text.

A family group chat.

Thirty-seven relatives.

One message.

"Sarah is no longer welcome at any family event until she apologizes to Vanessa and pays for the phone."

Then another.

"Anyone supporting Sarah can stay away too."

One by one...

Thumbs-up reactions appeared.

Heart emojis.

Agreement.

No one asked how Lily was.

Not one person.

I quietly exited the group.

Then I blocked every single one of them.

May you like

For the first time in my life...

The silence felt peaceful.
