CHAPTER 6 — The Decision No One Expected

CHAPTER 6 — The Decision No One Expected

Court resumed at nine o'clock sharp.

The judge entered carrying a thick written ruling.

Every person in the room stood.

She began reading.

"The court's sole obligation is the welfare of the child."

She paused.

"The evidence presented demonstrates repeated disregard for the child's documented life-threatening allergy."

Nathan stared at the bench without blinking.

The judge continued.

"The respondent's decision to remove the child was not an act of concealment."

"It was an act of protection."

A wave of emotion rushed through me.

I gripped the edge of the table to steady myself.

Then came the ruling.

"Temporary sole legal and physical custody is awarded to Elena Whitaker."

Nathan's face turned white.

The judge wasn't finished.

"All visitation between Nathan Whitaker and the child shall be professionally supervised until further order of this court."

Nathan stood abruptly.

"Your Honor, that's outrageous!"

The judge looked directly at him.

"Sit down."

He slowly obeyed.

She continued reading.

"The paternal grandparents shall have no contact with the child pending completion of the ongoing investigation."

Patricia burst into tears.

Brooke buried her face in her hands.

Neither woman looked at Leo.

Not once.

Outside the courtroom, Nathan finally caught up with me.

"I never wanted this."

I turned around.

"Really?"

"You forced my hand."

"My family was falling apart."

"No, Nathan."

"Your family fell apart the moment they decided my son's life mattered less than their pride."

He lowered his voice.

"You still love me."

I looked at the man I had married.

Then I remembered him telling me to apologize after our child nearly died.

"I loved the person I believed you were."

"But he never existed."

I walked away.

This time...

He didn't follow.

Weeks passed.

Life slowly became peaceful.

Leo started preschool in Toronto.

His teachers learned every detail of his allergy before his first day.

The school nurse introduced herself personally.

Emergency medication was stored in three different locations.

No one rolled their eyes.

No one called me dramatic.

Everyone simply said,

"We'll keep him safe."

It sounded so ordinary.

To me...

It felt extraordinary.

One rainy afternoon, my lawyer called.

"The criminal investigation has been completed."

I took a deep breath.

"And?"

"Charges are being recommended against Patricia and Brooke."

I closed my eyes.

Not because I felt victorious.

Because justice had finally caught up with them.

But my lawyer wasn't finished.

"There's one more thing."

"Nathan has contacted us."

"What does he want?"

"He says he's willing to testify against his own mother."

I looked out the window where Leo was laughing as he chased pigeons through the park.

For the first time in months...

He looked completely carefree.

May you like

Nathan had finally chosen the truth.

The only question was whether it had come far too late.
