CHAPTER 6 — THE SECRET THAT UNRAVELED EVERYTHING

CHAPTER 6 — THE SECRET THAT UNRAVELED EVERYTHING

The investigator introduced himself only as Agent Collins.

He asked the judge for permission to address a related matter.

My attorney leaned toward me.

"This isn't ours."

"It is now."

Agent Collins opened the file.

"We became interested after reviewing the forged lease."

"The formatting matched documents recovered during another investigation."

Vanessa frowned.

"What investigation?"

He looked directly at her.

"Your mortgage assistance applications."

The room froze.

Over the previous three years, Vanessa had repeatedly claimed she was homeless.

On other forms, she claimed she rented.

On others, she claimed she owned property through a family trust.

None of the stories matched.

Every application contained different financial information.

Different addresses.

Different employment records.

Different signatures.

The judge interrupted.

"Are you suggesting a pattern?"

Agent Collins nodded.

"We believe the forged lease in this matter may not be an isolated act."

Dad stood again.

"This has nothing to do with Clara."

"No," Agent Collins agreed.

"It has everything to do with your daughter."

Vanessa's attorney immediately requested a recess.

Denied.

The judge wanted the record completed.

Then came the phone records.

Months before breaking into the penthouse, Vanessa had exchanged dozens of messages with a document designer.

One text read:

Make it look official. County records scare people.

Another said:

If she fights back, I'll say she promised me the apartment years ago.

And another:

Once we're inside, it'll be impossible to get us out quickly.

The strategy had been planned long before I ever flew to London.

This wasn't desperation.

It was premeditation.

Mom broke down completely.

"You told us Clara agreed."

Vanessa wouldn't look at her.

Dad stared in disbelief.

"You lied to us?"

Still no answer.

Then Agent Collins revealed the final surprise.

"There is one more recording."

The courtroom lights dimmed again.

Security footage from the building's underground garage appeared.

The date was two weeks before the break-in.

Vanessa was seen following the moving company.

She hid behind a concrete pillar, secretly filming the movers loading my belongings.

She watched the closing process.

She watched the sale.

She watched the trucks leave.

She knew.

She had always known.

Yet she still told everyone the apartment belonged to me.

The silence afterward felt endless.

Finally, the judge spoke.

"Ms. Carter."

"When you entered that residence..."

"...you already knew your sister no longer lived there."

Vanessa's lips trembled.

For the first time since this nightmare began...

She couldn't manufacture another excuse.

She nodded.

Barely.

But it was enough.

It was an admission.

Recorded by the court reporter.

Captured by every attorney present.

Impossible to take back.

Outside the courthouse, reporters were already waiting.

Microphones appeared the moment the doors opened.

"Ms. Carter!"

"Did you knowingly trespass?"

"Did you forge the lease?"

"Did you lie about ownership?"

Vanessa covered her face and ran.

My parents hurried after her, their confidence replaced by panic.

I remained on the courthouse steps.

Julian walked over beside me.

"Are you alright?"

I watched my family disappear into the crowd.

"I've spent my whole life cleaning up after their choices."

"And now?"

I looked toward the courthouse doors, where another investigator was carrying out the evidence boxes.

"Now they finally have to clean up their own."

Julian gave a small nod.

"They won't be able to do it alone."

I knew he wasn't talking about the apartment anymore.

The home they tried to steal was gone forever.

Now they were in danger of losing something far more valuable.

Their freedom.
