Chapter 7: The Race to Find Claire

Chapter 7: The Race to Find Claire

Three hours after leaving the Whitmore estate, Ethan's private jet was in the air.

Denver disappeared beneath the clouds.

On the table before him lay Claire's journal, Emily's final letter, and a single framed photograph he had taken from the envelope.

Eleven years.

He had lost eleven years.

He refused to lose another day.

His head of security, Marcus Doyle, looked up from his laptop.

"There's a problem."

Ethan's eyes narrowed.

"What kind of problem?"

"The address Daniel Harper left is no longer current."

"What?"

"Margaret Lawson sold the house six weeks ago."

Ethan felt his stomach tighten.

"Where did they go?"

Marcus shook his head.

"No forwarding address."

A silence settled over the cabin.

Then Marcus spoke again.

"There's something else."

He turned the laptop around.

A local Montana news article filled the screen.

Beloved Foster Parent Margaret Lawson Dies Suddenly After Heart Attack.

Date:

Three weeks earlier.

Ethan closed his eyes.

"So Claire is alone."

"We don't know."

"But she isn't with Margaret anymore."

Marcus hesitated before continuing.

"County records indicate Child Protective Services placed her into emergency foster care."

Ethan stood.

"No."

"Sir—"

"No more foster homes."

"Not for my daughter."

He picked up his phone.

"I want every legal team Whitmore Industries has."

"And I want them in Montana before we land."

Back in Denver, Meredith sat alone in the empty mansion.

The engagement ring lay on the kitchen island.

Untouched.

The front door opened.

Her father, Charles Vale, walked inside without knocking.

He was seventy, impeccably dressed, and carried himself like a man accustomed to controlling outcomes.

"You failed."

Meredith looked up slowly.

"You knew."

"I knew enough."

"You told me keeping the child secret would protect everyone."

Charles sighed impatiently.

"It protected our family's reputation."

"It protected your future."

"It destroyed Claire's."

Charles shrugged.

"Collateral damage."

Meredith stared at him in horror.

For the first time in her life, she saw her father clearly.

Not as a powerful businessman.

But as a man who measured children against stock prices.

"You manipulated me."

"I gave you choices."

"You told me Ethan would never forgive Emily."

"I told you what needed to be said."

Meredith whispered,

"Emily trusted me."

Charles looked away.

"Emily became inconvenient."

Those words shattered the last excuse Meredith had been carrying for eleven years.

Everything she had done...

had been built upon someone else's cruelty.

Meanwhile, in Bozeman...

Claire Harper sat quietly on a wooden swing outside another unfamiliar house.

Another foster home.

Another temporary bedroom.

Another family trying to be kind.

She clutched the old stuffed bear Daniel had given her before he died.

A social worker approached.

"Claire?"

"Yes?"

"Someone has been asking about you."

Claire looked down.

"My biological father?"

The woman smiled sadly.

"We don't know yet."

Claire nodded.

"I was just guessing."

She had stopped expecting miracles years ago.

That evening, Ethan arrived at the county office moments after it closed.

The director recognized his name immediately.

"Mr. Whitmore..."

"I need to see Claire Harper."

"I'm sorry."

"There are procedures."

"I don't care about procedures."

"I care about my daughter."

The director looked genuinely sympathetic.

"Sir..."

"...she's gone."

Everything inside Ethan stopped.

"What do you mean gone?"

"This morning someone claiming to be a relative completed emergency custody paperwork."

Ethan's voice dropped to a whisper.

"What relative?"

"We believed everything was legitimate."

She handed him a copy.

Guardian:

Richard Lawson

Relationship:

Maternal uncle.

Marcus grabbed the paperwork.

"Sir..."

"There is no Richard Lawson."

The signature...

May you like

was forged.

Someone had taken Claire.
