CHAPTER 7 — The Man Behind Every Grave

CHAPTER 7 — The Man Behind Every Grave

The signet ring should have been impossible.

I had watched it lowered into my father's coffin eight years earlier.

Now it rested in my palm, polished, warm from the morning sun, as though someone had removed it from his hand only yesterday.

Marcus studied it carefully.

"It isn't a replica."

"You've seen it before?"

I nodded.

"My father never took it off."

Inside the velvet box was a second note, folded beneath the first.

It contained only an address and a time.

8:00 p.m.

Ashcroft Manor.

The estate had belonged to Victor Soren's family for generations.

It had been abandoned for years.

Or so the public believed.

Marcus immediately objected.

"It's a trap."

"I know."

"So we don't go."

I looked toward the upstairs window, where Emiliana stood holding our son while our daughter leaned sleepily against her shoulder.

"For three years, we've been reacting to Victor."

"Tonight..."

"We make him react to us."

By sunset, every federal agency involved in the child trafficking investigation had surrounded Ashcroft Manor without revealing their presence.

Drones circled silently overhead.

Snipers occupied neighboring rooftops.

Unmarked vehicles blocked every exit road.

Inside the mansion, only one room was lit.

The ballroom.

Victor Soren stood beside a roaring fireplace as if hosting an elegant dinner party.

He looked exactly like the smiling photographs from charity galas.

Silver hair.

Tailored black suit.

Perfect posture.

The face of a man trusted by presidents and praised by orphanages.

He smiled when I entered.

"Lucas."

"You finally look like your father."

"I hope that's not meant as a compliment."

"It is."

He poured two glasses of whiskey.

"I won't drink with you."

"I didn't expect you to."

He set the second glass down untouched.

"Your father refused, too."

For several moments neither of us spoke.

Victor admired the fire.

"I never wanted your children harmed."

I laughed once.

Coldly.

"You stole them."

"I preserved them."

The words were so monstrous that even Marcus, listening through my hidden earpiece, muttered a curse.

Victor remained calm.

"Do you know how many wealthy families destroy themselves fighting over inheritance?"

"Hundreds."

"I simply... redirected succession."

"You kidnapped children."

"I created leverage."

His voice never rose.

Never trembled.

That frightened me more than anger would have.

"Daniel was weak."

"He loved power more than responsibility."

"I merely opened the door."

"And my father?"

Victor's smile faded.

"Your father discovered everything."

"He wanted to expose me."

"So you killed him."

Victor looked almost offended.

"No."

"I gave him a choice."

"He chose silence."

I stared at him.

"My father died of a heart attack."

Victor walked toward an old cabinet.

"No."

"He died carrying guilt."

He opened a drawer and removed a sealed envelope.

"It belonged to him."

I broke the wax seal.

Inside was my father's final handwritten letter.

Lucas,

If you're reading this, I failed.

Victor owns judges, politicians, doctors, police officers, and businessmen. I tried to destroy him once. He answered by threatening my grandchildren.

I believed I could protect you by pretending ignorance. Instead, I protected evil.

Never make my mistake.

Expose everything.

Even if it costs our name.

My hands trembled.

For years I had believed my father died hiding secrets from us.

Now I understood.

He had died trying to protect us.

Victor checked his watch.

"Federal agents have surrounded the estate."

I didn't react.

"You knew?"

"I invited them."

He smiled again.

"They'll arrest accountants."

"Drivers."

"Doctors."

"Perhaps even Daniel."

"But not me."

"Why?"

"Because all the evidence against me disappeared one hour ago."

Marcus's voice burst through my earpiece.

"Lucas!"

"Our evidence servers—"

Static.

Then silence.

Someone had hacked them.

Victor spread his hands.

"I told you."

"You cannot beat a system."

May you like

"You must become one."

Then every light inside the mansion went dark.
