Chapter 6 - The Freezing of the Palace

While Richard Harrington was collapsing in his corporate office downtown, his wife Margaret was hosting her weekly high-society charity luncheon at the Harrington estate.
Twenty women dressed in linen dresses and pearl necklaces sat around a long, immaculate white table on the rear terrace, sipping champagne and eating delicate salmon sandwiches. Margaret sat at the head of the table, her voice loud and expressive as she discussed her upcoming trip to the French Riviera.
"It’s just such a relief to have the house back to its proper state," Margaret told the woman next to her, giving a delicate sigh. "For the last few years, it felt like we were hosting a military barracks. The noise, the mud... and that dreadful animal. One must maintain standards for the community."
Suddenly, the manicured lawn was disrupted by the sound of heavy diesel engines.
Three large, black commercial moving vans wound up the gravel driveway, followed by two unmarked white SUVs. The vehicles parked right across the pristine lawn, their tires tearing deep ruts into the perfectly manicured Kentucky bluegrass.
Margaret stood up from her chair, her champagne glass trembling. "What on earth is the meaning of this? Jean! Call the estate security immediately!"
Before her house manager could move, Marcus Miller stepped out of the lead SUV, accompanied by three uniformed private security officers and a legal representative carrying an official court order. They walked past the terrace and straight into the outdoor dining area.
"Mrs. Harrington," the legal representative said, presenting a document bearing a bright red judicial seal. "My name is David Vance, counsel for Logan Vance. We are here to execute an immediate asset recovery and property preservation order issued by the Mecklenburg County Superior Court."
Margaret's face turned white beneath her heavy makeup. "What? That’s absurd! This is my home! Logan Vance has no right to step foot on this property!"
"This property was purchased in 1994 using co-investment funds from your late daughter Sarah’s maternal estate trust," David Vance explained, his voice loud enough for every high-society guest to hear clearly. "According to the corporate structuring documents we unearthed this weekend, Richard Harrington signed a clause granting forty percent equity ownership of this physical estate to Sarah. Upon her passing, that equity transferred directly to her husband, Logan Vance."
"That’s a lie!" Margaret screamed, her voice losing its polished, aristocratic veneer. "He’s a nobody! He’s a common soldier!"
"Furthermore," Marcus Miller stepped forward, his expression hard as granite, "Mr. Logan Vance has just purchased the remaining sixty percent of the mortgage note from your banking provider through the Vanguard Trust. As of ten o'clock this morning, Logan Vance is the sole owner of the Harrington estate. You are currently trespassing on his private property."
The charity guests began to murmur frantically, several of them grabbing their designer handbags and standing up from the table.
"Margaret, what is going on?" one of her closest friends asked, looking horrified. "Is Richard in financial trouble?"
"Get off my lawn!" Margaret shrieked at the security officers. "Get out of my house!"

"You have until five o'clock this afternoon to pack your personal belongings into standard plastic containers," Marcus Miller said, gesturing toward the moving vans. "You are not allowed to remove any family heirlooms, silver rattles, or antique furniture until a full forensic inventory is completed by our team to ensure you aren't stealing assets belonging to Leo and Sam Vance."
Marcus looked down at his watch, then looked back up at Margaret with a cold, victorious smile. "Your deadline has officially begun, Mrs. Harrington. I suggest you start packing. It looks like rain is coming."
