CHAPTER 4 — The Man Behind the Curtain

CHAPTER 4 — The Man Behind the Curtain

Arthur Montgomery laughed.

Not because anything was funny.

Because experienced predators laugh when cornered.

"You think one email proves fraud?"

Leila folded her hands.

"It proves intent."

Arthur shrugged.

"Anyone can fabricate emails."

The cybersecurity specialist answered immediately.

"Not with embedded server authentication keys."

Arthur's smile faded.

"The metadata matches your corporate mail server."

Click.

The specialist opened another document.

Another email.

Another.

Another.

Thirty-seven messages.

All discussing the Arabic clause.

All sent over the previous six weeks.

Some from Preston.

Some from Arthur.

Others...

From someone no one expected.

Leila froze.

She enlarged the sender's address.

Karim leaned closer.

Arthur closed his eyes.

Just once.

As though hoping reality might disappear.

The sender read:

Richard Ellison

Karim frowned.

"The federal observer?"

No one answered.

Richard Ellison.

Deputy Director of the International Investment Compliance Office.

The government official assigned to supervise foreign infrastructure investments.

The same man who had attended three negotiation sessions.

The same man who constantly spoke about transparency.

The same man who had shaken Karim's hand that very morning.

Leila opened his email.

Delay disclosure until execution.

Once signed, sovereign immunity limits recovery.

Public investigation will arrive too late.

Karim slowly lowered the laptop.

His expression became unreadable.

"The government."

Leila nodded once.

"Someone inside it."

Arthur spoke quickly.

"You don't know if that's genuine."

The specialist clicked another file.

A recorded video appeared.

Security footage.

Date stamped.

Six nights earlier.

Arthur and Preston entered a conference room.

Minutes later Richard Ellison joined them.

No audio.

But the camera clearly showed them reviewing the Arabic contract together.

Arthur pointed at one paragraph.

Richard nodded.

Preston made handwritten changes.

Karim watched without blinking.

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Gregor, still standing near the doorway, whispered almost involuntarily,

"My God..."

Arthur suddenly pushed back his chair.

"We're finished here."

He reached for the laptop.

Karim's chief bodyguard moved faster.

One firm hand stopped Arthur's wrist.

"No."

Arthur jerked backward.

"You can't detain me."

Karim stood.

"No."

He adjusted his cufflinks with perfect calm.

"I don't need to."

Arthur frowned.

Karim looked toward the window overlooking the rain-soaked street.

"Because they're already here."

Blue and red lights flashed across the glass.

One...

Then three...

Then eight vehicles.

Sirens remained silent.

Professional.

Controlled.

Leila looked surprised.

"You called them?"

Karim shook his head.

"I didn't."

A knock echoed through the private dining room.

Three measured knocks.

The door opened.

Men and women in dark suits entered quietly.

Federal badges.

Financial Crimes Division.

Behind them walked a gray-haired woman carrying a leather portfolio.

She introduced herself without raising her voice.

"Special Agent Elena Brooks."

She placed an arrest warrant on the table.

"We've been investigating suspicious international asset transfers connected to Montgomery Helix Capital for eleven months."

Arthur stared.

Eleven months.

"We were waiting," she continued, "for someone to make the first overt move."

Her eyes shifted toward the ruined contract.

"...Thank you for saving us several more months."

Arthur slowly turned toward Shaina.

The waitress who had entered the room carrying nothing more dangerous than a silver teapot.

She met his gaze without speaking.

For the first time in decades...

Arthur Montgomery realized that his billion-dollar empire hadn't been destroyed by a rival CEO...

or a government investigation...

May you like

or a market crash.

It had begun collapsing because one waitress refused to stay invisible.
