Chapter 4: The Cameras Outside, the Truth Inside

Chapter 4: The Cameras Outside, the Truth Inside
By the time the first news van stopped at the corner of the street, another three had arrived behind it.
Satellite dishes unfolded toward the gray Christmas sky.
Reporters hurried through knee-deep snow, microphones hidden beneath scarves while camera operators fought the wind.
Within minutes, Emily's quiet apartment building looked like the center of a national emergency.
Neighbors crowded the hallways.
Someone whispered, "That's Anthony Moretti."
Someone else replied, "No... it can't be."
"It is."
"I've never seen him in public like this."
Inside Apartment 3B, the silence felt heavier than the noise outside.
Daniel touched the small microphone hidden beneath his lapel.
"Perimeter secure."
Another voice answered through his earpiece.
"Media count is increasing every minute."
Anthony didn't even look toward the window.
His attention remained on his mother.
He signed slowly.
Did anyone hurt you?
Margaret shook her head.
No.
Were you frightened?
She smiled faintly.
Only until Emily opened the door.
Anthony glanced toward Emily again.
There was gratitude in his eyes now, but something else as well.
Curiosity.
He wasn't used to people acting without expecting something in return.
Emily shifted awkwardly under his gaze.
"I really didn't do anything extraordinary."
Daniel almost laughed.
"Miss Carter, half the city walked past Mrs. Moretti last night."
Emily looked confused.
"I don't understand."
Daniel chose his words carefully.
"Mrs. Moretti's disappearance triggered the largest private search operation Buffalo has ever seen."
Emily stared.
"How many people?"
Daniel answered matter-of-factly.
"Four hundred and twelve."
She blinked.
"I'm sorry..."
"Did you say four hundred?"
Anthony nodded.
"My company."
"My security division."
"Friends."
"Police."
"Volunteers."
"They all searched."
Emily struggled to process the number.
All that...
For one elderly woman.
Margaret noticed the look on her face.
She gently touched Emily's arm.
Anthony worries too much.
Anthony gave his mother an almost offended look.
She smiled.
You do.
For the first time, Emily saw something unexpected.
They teased each other.
Like any family.
Not perfectly.
But lovingly.
A loud knock interrupted the moment.
Daniel frowned.
"I told everyone to hold the hallway."
One of the security officers opened the door.
Standing outside was an elderly nurse wearing a thick winter coat and carrying a small wrapped package.
Emily recognized her immediately.
"Mrs. Alvarez?"
The nurse smiled.
"I heard the television downstairs."
She looked embarrassed.
"I came to check on you."
Mrs. Sofia Alvarez had worked at Maple Ridge Care Center for nearly twenty years.
She was the nurse who always sneaked an extra pudding cup to Ruth Carter when Ruth pretended she wasn't hungry.
She noticed the room full of suited security officers.
Then Anthony.
Then Margaret.
Her eyebrows rose.
"I seem to have interrupted something."
Emily laughed nervously.
"A little."
Mrs. Alvarez handed Emily the package.
"It's from your grandmother."
Emily frowned.
"Grandma sent this?"
"Yesterday afternoon."
"She asked me to bring it after my shift."
Emily slowly unwrapped the small box.
Inside lay a hand-knitted blue scarf.
Along with a folded Christmas card.
Emily unfolded it.
The handwriting was shaky but unmistakably Ruth's.
My darling Emily,
Don't spend money on presents for me.
You already give me the greatest gift every week.
You come.
You sit.
You listen.
Never believe love is measured in dollars.
It's measured in time.
Merry Christmas, sweetheart.
Love always,
Grandma.
Emily couldn't stop the tears.
She quickly wiped them away.
Too late.
Anthony had seen.
So had Margaret.
Margaret reached over and squeezed Emily's hand.
Anthony quietly asked, "Your grandmother lives at Maple Ridge?"
Emily nodded.
"She's eighty-seven."
"She's all the family I have."
Mrs. Alvarez hesitated.
"There is... something else."
Emily looked up.
"The administrator said..."
She looked uncomfortable saying it in front of strangers.
"...if the balance isn't paid soon..."
Emily already knew.
"...they may have to transfer your grandmother."
The apartment fell silent.
Emily forced a smile.
"I'll figure something out."
Anthony looked toward Daniel.
Daniel knew that look.
He'd seen it before.
Usually right before Anthony solved someone else's impossible problem.
Daniel gave the slightest shake of his head.
Not now.
Anthony understood.
If he offered money immediately, Emily would feel like charity.
And somehow...
He suspected she would refuse.
Outside, reporters had begun knocking on every apartment door in the building.
One young journalist finally reached the third floor.
Before she could knock, Daniel stepped into the hallway.
"I'm sorry."
"No interviews."
She held up her microphone.
"The public deserves—"
"The public deserves accurate information."
She hesitated.
"Is Mrs. Moretti safe?"
"Yes."
"Was she kidnapped?"
"No."
"Who found her?"
Daniel looked back through the half-open apartment door.
He could see Emily pouring fresh coffee into Margaret's mug.
She wasn't looking toward the cameras.
She wasn't trying to be noticed.
She was simply making sure the coffee stayed warm.
Daniel answered quietly.
"A waitress."
The reporter scribbled furiously.
"Can we have her name?"
Daniel smiled politely.
"No."
He closed the door.
Inside, Margaret suddenly stood.
Everyone looked at her.
She walked toward the kitchen table.
Her eyes settled on the stack of unpaid bills Emily hadn't hidden well enough.
Without touching them, she turned to Anthony.
Her hands moved with calm precision.
You asked me last year what I wanted for Christmas.
Anthony nodded.
"I remember."
I want one thing.
"Anything."
She pointed toward Emily.
Anthony followed her gaze.
Then Margaret signed words that made everyone in the room hold their breath.
I don't want you to repay her.
Anthony looked surprised.
She continued.
I want you to know her.
He frowned slightly.
Margaret's eyes filled with quiet determination.
Money can settle a debt.
She paused.
But gratitude should build a relationship.
Anthony didn't answer immediately.
Instead, he looked around the tiny apartment once more.
The worn furniture.
The old kitten asleep on a blanket.
The Christmas card still open on the table.
The young waitress who had almost nothing...
...and still found room in her life for a stranger.
For reasons he couldn't quite explain...
It reminded him of someone.
Someone he hadn't been in a very long time.
He turned back to Emily.
"Miss Carter..."
She looked up.
"I have a favor to ask."
Emily blinked.
"A favor?"
He nodded.
"Would you have Christmas dinner with my mother..."
He hesitated.
"...and with me?"
Emily stared at him, certain she had misunderstood.
Before she could answer—
Daniel's earpiece crackled sharply.
His expression changed in an instant.
"Sir."
Anthony looked over.
"What now?"
Daniel's voice was low.
"Our cybersecurity team just confirmed something."
"What?"
"The leak about your mother's disappearance..."
He paused.
"It didn't come from outside."
Anthony's eyes hardened.
Daniel finished the sentence.
"It came from someone inside the Moretti organization."
The warmth of Christmas morning vanished in a heartbeat.
Someone close to Anthony Moretti had betrayed him.
May you like
And whoever it was...
had known Margaret would be alone.
