CHAPTER 4 — THE TABLES TURN

CHAPTER 4 — THE TABLES TURN

Emma told the entire story.

Every word.

No exaggeration.

No anger.

Only facts.

How Rose had arrived alone.

How she had quietly celebrated her birthday.

How Vanessa demanded she be removed.

How Preston obeyed.

How Rose apologized for existing.

How Emma defended her.

How she was fired.

When Emma finished, the restaurant was completely silent.

Charles Greer's jaw tightened.

He slowly faced Preston.

"Is any part of what she said false?"

Preston looked around desperately.

"No..."

"But I was protecting our reputation."

Charles stared at him.

"Our reputation?"

He pointed toward Rose.

"She is our reputation."

Then toward Emma.

"So is she."

He looked around the dining room.

"If kindness leaves this building..."

"...nothing expensive inside these walls has any value."

Several guests lowered their eyes.

Charles turned toward Emma.

"You are rehired."

Emma blinked.

"What?"

"I believe I was unclear."

Charles smiled warmly.

"You were never fired."

He looked toward Preston.

"But he is."

Preston's face went white.

"Sir..."

"You can't..."

"I've worked here eight years."

Charles nodded.

"And tonight you forgot the first sentence in our employee handbook."

Preston frowned.

"What sentence?"

Charles answered from memory.

"Every guest deserves dignity."

He held out his hand.

"Your office keys."

Preston stared for several seconds.

Then slowly removed the key ring.

His career ended without another word.

Charles handed the keys to the assistant manager.

"Congratulations."

"You're in charge."

The young woman almost burst into tears.

Meanwhile, Vanessa stood abruptly.

"This is ridiculous."

Charles turned.

"Mrs. Whitmore."

"I believe your evening is over."

She frowned.

"You're asking me to leave?"

"No."

"I'm banning you."

Her face froze.

"You can't ban me."

Charles calmly replied,

"I own the building."

"I assure you..."

"I can."

Vanessa looked toward Brock.

"Say something."

Brock couldn't.

His phone vibrated.

Once.

Twice.

Then continuously.

He looked down.

His face turned gray.

Every message came from his executives.

CARTER CAPITAL HAS SUSPENDED ALL NEGOTIATIONS.

ALL FINANCING MEETINGS CANCELED.

URGENT—CALL IMMEDIATELY.

Brock slowly looked at Nathan.

"You did this."

Nathan answered calmly.

"No."

"I simply chose not to continue doing business with people who laugh at elderly women."

Brock's knees almost gave out.

"Please."

"My company employs eight hundred people."

Nathan looked directly into his eyes.

"My mother raised one little boy."

"She taught him that character matters more than money."

"You laughed at the woman who taught me everything."

"There are consequences."

Vanessa suddenly rushed toward Rose.

"I'm..."

"I'm sorry."

Rose looked at her quietly.

"For which part?"

Vanessa couldn't answer.

Rose continued softly,

"Are you sorry because you hurt me..."

"...or because you discovered who my son is?"

Vanessa opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Rose smiled sadly.

"I already know."

Nathan gently pulled out the beautiful window table where Rose had first been seated.

He straightened the chair himself.

"Mama."

"Your birthday dinner isn't finished."

Rose smiled through tears.

"You always take care of me."

Nathan kissed her forehead.

"You spent your whole life taking care of me."

"Now it's my turn."

The pianist slowly began playing again.

This time, the melody was warmer.

Softer.

Charles Greer personally served Rose her birthday dessert.

A small vanilla cake with one candle.

The entire restaurant stood.

One by one...

Guests began applauding.

Not because Rose was the mother of a billionaire.

But because they finally understood something they should have known all along.
