CHAPTER 2 — THE GIRL ON THE MARBLE FLOOR

Lily Hart was slapped to the marble floor in front of hundreds of wealthy guests.
The tray crashed.
The music stopped.
And a thin line of blood appeared on her cheek.
Victoria Sterling, dressed in diamonds and standing beneath crystal chandeliers, looked down at her with pure contempt.
“Know your place,” she snapped.
No one defended Lily.
Not the guests.
Not the staff.
Not even the people who looked ashamed.
Then Lily slowly lifted her head.
She hadn't come to the Sterling mansion to serve drinks.
She had come for the truth.
Looking directly at Victoria, she said four words that froze the entire ballroom:
“Happy birthday, my sister.”
Victoria turned pale.
Across the room, Eleanor Sterling dropped her wine glass.
“It can't be...” she whispered.
What happened next exposed a family secret hidden for 28 years...

The ballroom remained silent.
Victoria Sterling stared at Lily as if she had seen a ghost.
“That's impossible,” Victoria whispered.
Lily slowly rose to her feet, ignoring the blood on her cheek.
For twenty-four years she had lived with questions.
Questions her adoptive mother could never answer.
Questions hidden inside a faded letter she had discovered only three weeks earlier.
A letter written by a dying woman.
A woman named Margaret Sterling.
The same surname hanging above every portrait in the mansion.
“I think you heard me,” Lily said calmly. “Happy birthday, my sister.”
The guests exchanged nervous glances.
Across the room, Eleanor Sterling's hands trembled.
Her face had turned completely white.
“Who gave you that letter?” Eleanor asked.
Lily reached into her apron pocket.
Then she pulled out a yellowed envelope.
The moment Eleanor saw it, she nearly collapsed.
Because she recognized her own handwriting.
Twenty-four years ago, Eleanor had written a confession.
A confession she thought had been destroyed forever.
Victoria grabbed the envelope.
“What is happening?”
Eleanor closed her eyes.
Tears filled them instantly.
“Victoria...” she whispered.
“There was another baby.”
The ballroom erupted.
Victoria stepped backward.
“No.”
Eleanor nodded slowly.
“Yes.”
The truth she had buried for more than two decades was finally coming back.

And this was only the beginning.
