CHAPTER 6 — The Woman Who Walked Into the Trap

CHAPTER 6 — The Woman Who Walked Into the Trap
Rain poured over the city as Evelyn drove Richard's old SUV toward the harbor.
She ignored every pain shooting through her body.
The letter lay open on the passenger seat.
Its final sentence refused to leave her mind.
The second key has always been with you.
She finally understood.
Not completely.
But enough.
Richard had hidden something where no one would ever think to look.
Inside the medical records of their unborn child.
The encrypted DNA sequence collected during the pregnancy wasn't a medical test at all.
It was part of Atlas.
If the child was born safely...
the final encryption key would exist.
If the baby died...
Atlas would remain permanently locked.
That was why every attack had targeted her pregnancy.
Not her.
The baby.
Detective Ruiz listened in disbelief as technicians traced the GPS signal from Evelyn's vehicle.
"Where is she?"
The analyst answered immediately.
"Pier 19."
Ruiz's face hardened.
"Send everyone."
Evelyn reached the abandoned warehouse overlooking the docks.
The building looked deserted.
Broken windows.
Rusted steel doors.
Silence.
Too much silence.
She stepped inside.
"Richard?"
No answer.
Another step.
Then another.
A slow clap echoed through the darkness.
The man in black emerged.
"I knew you'd come."
Evelyn remained calm.
"You wanted me here."
"Yes."
"So let's stop pretending."
He smiled.
"I was hoping you'd say that."
Floodlights suddenly illuminated the warehouse.
Richard was chained to a chair twenty feet away.
Bruised.
Weak.
But alive.
Their eyes met.
"Evelyn!"
"Don't come closer!"
Too late.
Metal doors slammed shut behind her.
Dozens of armed men appeared from the shadows.
Ruiz's warning echoed inside her memory.
You're walking into a trap.
She had known.
She came anyway.
The man in black extended one hand.
"The key."
"I don't have it."
"You do."
"No."
He sighed.
"I was hoping we could avoid this."
He nodded toward Richard.
One guard struck Richard across the ribs with a steel baton.
The crack echoed through the warehouse.
"Stop!"
Evelyn screamed.
"The key!"
the stranger repeated.
Tears filled her eyes.
"It isn't a file."
"It isn't a password."
"It never was."
The man stopped smiling.
"What do you mean?"
Evelyn slowly placed both hands over her belly.
"The key..."
"...is my child."
For the first time...
the mysterious leader looked genuinely shocked.
Then he laughed.
A long, satisfied laugh.
"So Richard finally understood."
He turned toward his men.
"Prepare the operating room."
Richard began struggling against his chains with desperate strength.
"No!"
The stranger looked back at Evelyn.
"We don't need the baby alive."
"We only need the DNA."
At that exact second—
The warehouse roof exploded with the deafening crash of shattering glass.
Smoke grenades rained from above.
"Federal Police!"
"Drop your weapons!"
Gunfire erupted in every direction.
Detective Ruiz had found them.
But in the chaos...
one masked gunman slipped behind Evelyn unnoticed.
May you like
He pressed a syringe against her neck.
And emptied its contents before anyone could stop him.
