Epilogue: One Year Later

Epilogue: One Year Later
Chicago had changed.
Not because crime disappeared.
It hadn't.
But Sebastian Lombardi had.
After multiple surgeries, years of scar tissue were removed from around his damaged nerves. Recovery was slow, painful, and uncertain, but every month brought another impossible milestone.
First, he stood for ten seconds.
Then one minute.
Eventually, with a cane, he walked across the rehabilitation gym under his own strength.
Not because of a miracle.
Because the truth had finally been allowed to heal.
Marco Lombardi was convicted after investigators uncovered decades of financial crimes, corruption, conspiracy, and the illegal medical program known as Project Lazarus. The remaining members of the network faced justice as hidden records surfaced from facilities across the country.
As for me, I never returned to treating patients in secret.
With Sebastian's financial support—but entirely under my own leadership—I opened the Oliver Carter Rehabilitation Center, a nonprofit clinic dedicated to helping children and adults with complex neurological injuries receive treatment regardless of their ability to pay.
Oliver's asthma gradually came under better control, and for the first time in years, I watched him run across a playground without stopping to catch his breath.
One crisp autumn afternoon, he looked up at Sebastian, who was practicing short walks with his cane.
"Race you to the tree!"
Sebastian laughed.
A real laugh.
One that carried none of the bitterness he had worn like armor for twenty years.
"I'll lose."
Oliver grinned.
"Maybe today."
Sebastian glanced at me.
"For the first time in my life..."
He smiled.
"...I'm happy to lose."
As the three of us walked beneath the golden leaves, I realized something that no amount of money, power, or revenge could ever buy.
The greatest victory wasn't standing again.
May you like
It was finally being free from the lies that had kept all of us prisoners for far too long.
The End.
