CHAPTER 8: A NEW NAME

CHAPTER 8: A NEW NAME

Three months later...

Spring finally arrived in Chicago.

Eli walked slowly across the backyard of a small lakeside house.

His scar was still visible beneath his hair.

Physical therapy remained difficult.

But he was alive.

That was enough.

Dominic had left the Mercer syndicate.

It had shocked the entire city.

Every illegal business had been transferred, dismantled, or turned over under court supervision as part of an unprecedented agreement negotiated through federal prosecutors.

Marcus had followed him.

"So..."

Marcus asked while assembling a swing set.

"What do we do now?"

Dominic smiled.

"I've always wanted to build something instead of controlling it."

"What?"

"A children's trauma foundation."

Marcus laughed.

"Only you would retire from organized crime and open a charity."

Dominic shrugged.

"I've got experience with broken people."

Inside the house...

Clara watched through the kitchen window.

She smiled.

Eli tugged at Dominic's sleeve.

"Dad?"

"Yeah?"

"Push me higher."

Dominic laughed.

"Your mother already thinks I spoil you."

"I do."

Clara called from the porch.

"But only a little."

For the first time in years...

They sounded like a family.

That evening...

There was one final visitor.

Victor Mercer.

No bodyguards.

No expensive cars.

Just an old man carrying a paper bag.

Dominic opened the door.

"What are you doing here?"

Victor held out the bag awkwardly.

"I..."

"...brought cookies."

Dominic almost smiled.

"You don't bake."

"I bought them."

"I figured."

An uncomfortable silence followed.

Finally...

Eli peeked around Dominic's leg.

"Hi."

Victor looked at the little boy.

His grandson.

The child he'd protected from a distance for six years.

The child he'd never dared to hold.

"Hello."

Eli studied him carefully.

"Mom says you're Grandpa."

Victor nodded once.

"If..."

"...if you'll have me."

Eli thought very seriously.

Then asked,

"Do grandpas play dinosaurs?"

Victor blinked.

"I've never tried."

"You can learn."

The old man smiled through tears.

"I'd like that."

Eli reached out his hand.

Victor took it carefully.

For the first time...

Not as the feared head of a criminal empire.

Not as a man feared across Chicago.

But simply...

As a grandfather.

EPILOGUE: BEFORE SUNRISE

One year later.

Dominic stood outside St. Catherine's Children's Hospital.

Not as the man responsible for a terrible accident.

But as the founder of the Mercer Children's Recovery Foundation, which funded emergency surgeries, rehabilitation, and counseling for injured children regardless of their families' ability to pay.

Inside the lobby hung a framed photograph.

A smiling little boy in a yellow raincoat held the hand of a dark-haired man.

Both were laughing.

Beneath the picture was a simple plaque.

"Some families are born together.

Some find each other after the darkest night.

Never waste the morning you've been given."

Dominic felt a small hand slip into his.

"Dad?"

He looked down.

Eli.

Healthy.

Happy.

Holding the same little green dinosaur that had once lain forgotten on a rain-soaked Chicago street.

"Ready?"

Dominic smiled.

"Always."

They walked into the hospital together.

Not to save a life this time—

But to help save someone else's.

And as the sun rose over Chicago, Dominic finally understood the truth that had eluded him for so many years:

May you like

The most powerful legacy a man could leave behind was not fear.

It was love.
