CHAPTER 6: The Boy Who Drew the Truth

CHAPTER 6: The Boy Who Drew the Truth

News spread quickly.

Not to the public.

Not yet.

Only among investigators.

The case was no longer about child neglect.

It had become something far darker.

Financial fraud.

Evidence tampering.

Possible conspiracy.

And perhaps...

Murder.

Richard sat outside Ethan's room unable to sleep.

When morning came, Ethan opened the door carrying one of his new library books.

"Dad?"

"Morning."

"I had a dream."

"What about?"

"Mom."

Richard's chest tightened.

"What happened?"

Ethan smiled softly.

"She wasn't crying anymore."

Silence filled the hallway.

"I think..."

The little boy whispered.

"...she knows you found me."

Richard could not answer.

He simply pulled Ethan into the longest hug they had ever shared.

At school, Ethan's teacher approached Richard.

"Mr. Blackwood?"

"Yes?"

"I found something while cleaning the classroom."

She handed him a large envelope.

"Ethan asked me to keep these safe."

Richard looked inside.

Drawings.

Hundreds of them.

Every week.

For years.

The earliest showed a smiling family.

Mom.

Dad.

Baby Ethan.

Then Emily disappeared from the pictures.

Soon afterward, another woman appeared.

Cassandra.

But something changed.

Every drawing afterward grew darker.

Smaller.

Colder.

Until finally...

Richard found one that stole the air from his lungs.

A picture of the mansion.

A tiny child standing inside.

Every window was black.

Across the roof Ethan had written in careful pencil:

"Big houses can still be lonely."

Richard turned another page.

The final drawing had never been colored.

Only gray pencil.

A dining table.

One empty chair.

A father working on a laptop.

A little boy hiding behind a trash can.

At the bottom Ethan had written one heartbreaking sentence.

"Dad can't see me because work is louder than I am."

Richard pressed the page against his forehead.

He couldn't stop crying.

That evening he framed the drawing instead of hiding it.

He hung it inside his home office.

Directly opposite his desk.

So every business decision from that day forward would begin with the same reminder.

Never again.

Across town, Cassandra arrived at her attorney's office expecting reassurance.

Instead she found federal investigators waiting.

One stepped forward.

"Cassandra Vale?"

"Yes?"

"We have a warrant to seize your electronic devices."

She forced a smile.

"This is unnecessary."

"We'll decide that."

Her phone.

Laptop.

Tablet.

Backup drives.

Everything disappeared into evidence bags.

As investigators escorted her toward the elevator, Cassandra remained calm.

Too calm.

She knew one thing.

As long as one secret stayed buried...

She could still survive.

That night Detective Brooks received the first results from Cassandra's encrypted phone.

One recovered message had been deleted years earlier.

It was addressed to an unknown contact.

Only seven words.

"The boy must never remember what he saw."

Brooks immediately called Richard.

"What did Ethan see?"

Richard looked toward the living room.

His son sat on the carpet quietly building a puzzle.

Then a memory surfaced.

The night Emily died...

Ethan had been in the back seat.

He survived with only minor injuries.

Everyone assumed the trauma erased his memories.

Richard slowly lowered the phone.

"Oh my God..."

Detective Brooks spoke carefully.

"What is it?"

Richard stared at his son.

If Ethan remembered...

May you like

Then the little boy who had spent years starving in silence...

Might also be the only living witness to what really happened the night his mother died.
