Chapter 7: Mr. Henry’s Secret

Chapter 7: Mr. Henry’s Secret
The photograph haunted Gabriel all night.
He stared at it over and over again.
Emily.
Mr. Henry.
A hospital parking garage.
Two weeks before her death.
Nothing made sense.
Mr. Henry had protected Lucia.
He had exposed Victoria.
He had practically saved Bella's life.
Why would Emily secretly meet him?
And why had she never told Gabriel?
The next morning, Gabriel made a decision.
He drove back to the mansion and went straight to Mr. Henry's quarters.
The old butler was packing.
Carefully.
Quietly.
As if he had been expecting this moment.
Gabriel closed the door behind him.
"We need to talk."
Mr. Henry nodded.
"I know."
Gabriel placed the photograph on the table.
"Tell me the truth."
The old man stared at the image.
His shoulders sagged.
For the first time in years, he looked every bit of his seventy-two years.
"Emily gave this to me."
Gabriel froze.
"What?"
"She asked me to keep it safe."
"Why?"
Mr. Henry took a long breath.
Then he opened the wooden box he had been hiding.
Inside were documents.
Photographs.
Medical records.
And one small digital recorder.
The same recorder Emily had used during the final months of her life.
Gabriel's heartbeat accelerated.
Mr. Henry pressed play.
Static crackled through the room.
Then Emily's voice emerged.
Weak.
Nervous.
Terrified.
"If anything happens to me... Gabriel must hear this."
Gabriel's eyes widened.
"Emily..."
The recording continued.
"I don't know who I can trust anymore."
A pause.
Then:
"Someone has been stealing information from Whitmore Medical."
Gabriel frowned.
Whitmore Medical was one of his largest companies.
A billion-dollar healthcare corporation.
Emily's voice trembled.
"I found evidence that experimental drugs were being tested illegally."
The room fell silent.
Mr. Henry lowered his head.
"She discovered something she wasn't supposed to find."
Gabriel felt cold.
Very cold.
"Who was involved?"
The recorder crackled.
Then Emily spoke a name.
A name that neither man expected.
"Richard Whitmore."
Gabriel nearly dropped the recorder.
His father.
The founder of the Whitmore empire.
The man who had died three years earlier.
"No..."
Mr. Henry looked away.
"Your father built an empire."
A pause.
"But some parts of that empire were rotten."
Gabriel felt his world collapsing.
The recording continued.
"If Richard learns what I know, he'll destroy everything."
Another pause.
Then Emily whispered the words that changed everything.
"Even after death, his partners are still protecting the secret."
The recording ended.
Silence.
Neither man spoke.
Because they both understood what it meant.
Emily had not died because of jealousy.
She had not died because of Victoria.
She had died because she discovered something much bigger.
Something powerful people were willing to kill to hide.
May you like
And somewhere out there...
Those people were still free.
