CHAPTER 7 – THE FATHER'S FINAL CHOICE

CHAPTER 7 – THE FATHER'S FINAL CHOICE
For several long seconds, no one moved.
Daniel stood in the doorway with eight armed guards behind him.
The pistol in his hand never wavered.
Grace instinctively pulled Lily behind her.
Michael quietly stepped forward.
"If you're going to kill someone," he said, "kill me."
Daniel smiled.
"That was always the plan."
He raised the gun.
Then another voice thundered through the underground chamber.
"DROP IT!"
Every head turned.
Warren Whitmore stood at the entrance of the tunnel, flanked by half a dozen state police detectives and FBI agents.
Daniel's smile disappeared.
Grace stared in disbelief.
"The police?"
Warren never took his eyes off Daniel.
"I spent thirty years believing the wrong son."
Michael looked at his father, speechless.
"You... believed I was guilty."
"I did."
Warren's voice broke.
"And that mistake destroyed my family."
One of the FBI agents stepped forward.
"Daniel Whitmore, put the weapon down."
Instead, Daniel laughed.
"You really think you've won?"
He grabbed Lily and pulled her against him, pressing the pistol to the little girl's head.
The room exploded with panic.
"Nobody move!"
Grace screamed.
"Lily!"
The five-year-old was trembling, but she didn't cry.
She looked up at Daniel with innocent curiosity.
"Why are you so angry?"
Daniel blinked.
"What?"
"My mommy says angry people usually have something broken inside."
For the briefest moment...
His grip loosened.
That was all Michael needed.
He lunged.
The gun fired.
The deafening shot echoed through the chamber.
Daniel stumbled backward.
Michael collapsed.
Blood spread rapidly across his shoulder.
"NO!" Warren shouted.
Agents rushed forward.
Daniel tried to fire again, but an FBI sniper's bullet shattered the weapon from his hand.
Within seconds he was on the ground in handcuffs.
"It's over," an agent said.
Daniel looked at Warren and smiled one last time.
"No."
"You've only uncovered one company."
Warren frowned.
"What does that mean?"
Daniel whispered,
"You'll never find the others."
Hours later...
Federal agents searched every inch of the underground archive.
Hidden ledgers revealed decades of fraud.
Offshore accounts.
Bribed officials.
Illegal adoptions.
Money laundering.
The investigation spread across several states.
By sunrise, more than forty arrests had been made.
News helicopters circled above the Whitmore estate.
The empire Daniel had secretly built was collapsing faster than anyone imagined.
Michael survived emergency surgery.
The bullet had missed his heart by less than an inch.
When he finally opened his eyes, Warren was sitting beside the hospital bed.
Neither man spoke for a long time.
Then Warren whispered,
"I'm sorry."
Michael looked at his father.
"For what?"
"For burying you before you were dead."
Tears filled both men's eyes.
Thirty years of silence ended with two simple words.
"I'm home."
May you like
Father and son embraced for the first time since Michael had been a teenager.
Grace quietly closed the hospital room door to give them the privacy they had both waited decades to find.
