CHAPTER 6 — THE WOMAN WHO WAS ABOUT TO LEAVE

CHAPTER 6 — THE WOMAN WHO WAS ABOUT TO LEAVE
Spring arrived.
The roses outside Evelyn's window bloomed brighter than they had in years.
Neighbors who hadn't seen her in months were surprised to find her sitting on the front porch instead of hiding inside.
Sometimes she even waved.
Grace noticed the changes more than anyone.
Evelyn laughed easily now.
She read books again.
She baked with Daniel on weekends.
She no longer counted the hours.
She filled them.
One afternoon, Grace received a phone call while folding laundry.
Her expression changed immediately.
She stepped outside before answering.
Daniel happened to walk through the hallway and noticed tears in her eyes when she returned.
"Is everything alright?"
Grace forced a smile.
"Just family."
But it wasn't.
That evening, after everyone had gone to bed, Grace sat alone in the kitchen holding a medical report.
Her younger sister, Linda, had been diagnosed with advanced kidney failure.
She lived three states away.
She had no one else.
Grace knew what she had to do.
The next morning, she wrote a resignation letter.
She stared at it for nearly an hour before slipping it into an envelope.
After lunch she knocked gently on Daniel's office door.
"Do you have a moment?"
He smiled.
"Of course."
Grace handed him the envelope.
"I need to leave."
Daniel frowned.
"What do you mean?"
"My sister is very sick."
"I have to take care of her."
He slowly opened the letter.
"No..."
Grace nodded.
"I'm so sorry."
Daniel looked speechless.
"You can't leave."
"I have to."
"My mother..."
Grace interrupted gently.
"Your mother doesn't need me anymore."
"She needs you."
Daniel looked toward the garden.
Evelyn was slowly trimming roses by herself.
Smiling.
Confident.
For the first time...
Grace was right.
That evening Daniel struggled to tell Evelyn.
When he finally did, the older woman's hands became perfectly still.
"When?"
"In two days."
Evelyn nodded quietly.
"I knew this day would come."
"You did?"
"Grace wasn't sent here to stay forever."
"She was sent here to remind us how to become a family again."
Daniel lowered his eyes.
Neither of them noticed Grace standing just outside the doorway, silently crying.
She had come to say goodnight.
Instead, she had heard the greatest compliment anyone had ever given her.
Two days later, Grace packed her small brown bag—the same one she had carried on her first day.
As she stepped toward the front door, Evelyn called her name.
"Wait."
Grace turned.
Evelyn slowly walked forward.
Not in a wheelchair.
Not with someone pushing her.
But on her own, supported only by a cane.
Step by painful step.
Daniel watched in astonishment.
Months earlier, the doctors had doubted she would ever walk that far again.
Evelyn reached Grace...
Opened her arms...
And embraced her tightly.
"You didn't save my life," Evelyn whispered through tears.
"You gave it back."
Daniel stood frozen, believing the farewell was over.

He had no idea that Grace was about to reveal a secret she had hidden since the very first day she entered the Whitmore mansion—a secret that would change the way both of them saw her forever.
To be continued…
