CHAPTER 2 – THE VOICEMAIL THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

CHAPTER 2 – THE VOICEMAIL THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

Lily's fingers tightened around the cracked phone until the plastic creaked beneath her grip.

Celeste took another graceful step forward.

"Sweetheart," she said softly. "You're frightened. Adults sometimes imagine things during stressful days."

Lily stared at her.

"No."

The single word echoed far louder than anyone expected.

"I heard your voice."

Silence swallowed the laundry room.

Celeste's smile remained perfectly in place, but her eyes narrowed for only a fraction of a second.

Enough.

Vincent noticed.

He noticed everything.

"You think that was my voice?" Celeste asked, kneeling to Lily's height.

She smelled exactly like the hallway outside the pantry.

That sharp floral perfume.

The same perfume that had overpowered the scent of vanilla beside the wedding cake.

Lily instinctively stepped backward.

"You were there."

"I was checking decorations."

"You weren't."

Celeste's expression didn't change.

"You were hiding behind the cake."

The room became impossibly still.

Grace immediately pulled Lily behind her.

"She's only a child."

But Vincent raised one hand.

"Let her finish."

Lily swallowed.

"I couldn't see everything."

"But I heard Mr. Vale say..."

She closed her eyes, replaying every word.

"...After the first slice..."

"...no one will look at the cake again."

Adrien finally laughed.

A slow, controlled laugh.

"This is absurd."

"A frightened child overhears half a conversation and suddenly we're conducting a criminal investigation?"

He looked directly at Vincent.

"The guests are waiting."

"The governor is here."

"The mayor is here."

"The press is here."

"If we delay this ceremony over childish imagination, tomorrow every newspaper in New Jersey will mock us."

Vincent never looked away from Lily.

"What else?"

Lily hesitated.

Then she reached into the oversized apron.

Not for the phone.

For the napkin.

She unfolded it carefully.

Inside the dried ivory frosting was something none of them had noticed before.

A tiny gold bead.

It sparkled beneath the fluorescent kitchen lights.

Carmine frowned.

"That's not cake decoration."

Vincent extended his hand.

Lily placed the bead into his palm.

The old mafia boss rolled it between two fingers.

His expression darkened.

"I know this."

Everyone waited.

"It's from Celeste's wedding dress."

Every eye turned toward the bride.

Celeste looked down instinctively.

One tiny bead was indeed missing from the lace around her sleeve.

Just one.

Almost invisible.

Unless someone already knew where to look.

Adrien spoke immediately.

"So?"

"A bride brushing against a cake before her wedding isn't exactly evidence."

Grace nodded nervously.

"That's true."

But Lily shook her head.

"It wasn't stuck on the outside."

"It was inside the frosting."

Nobody breathed.

Lily continued.

"The cake wasn't finished."

"It had already been opened."

For the first time since entering the room...

Vincent looked uncertain.

Only for a heartbeat.

Then—

"Open the security logs."

Carmine immediately unlocked the tablet.

Camera records.

Door access.

Kitchen schedules.

Everything.

His fingers flew across the screen.

Suddenly...

He froze.

"Boss..."

Vincent looked over.

"What?"

"The pantry camera wasn't the only one disabled."

"What else?"

"The ballroom cake camera."

Everyone stared.

"The what?"

Vincent answered calmly.

"I always record expensive deliveries."

He looked at Adrien.

"You arranged the security contractor."

Adrien smiled.

"Naturally."

Vincent continued.

"The cake had its own camera."

"So if someone tampered with it..."

"...there should be footage."

Carmine's face slowly lost color.

"There isn't."

"What do you mean?"

"The entire recording..."

"...is gone."

No one spoke.

Deleted.

Not corrupted.

Not interrupted.

Deleted.

Only one person had administrator access besides Vincent himself.

Adrien Vale.

Celeste finally lost a fraction of her composure.

"Vincent..."

"This is becoming ridiculous."

"You trust a servant over your own fiancée?"

Vincent answered without emotion.

"I trust evidence."

At that exact moment—

BEEP.

Lily's old phone vibrated again.

Another message.

Unknown number.

Everyone looked.

Lily slowly opened it.

This time there was no threat.

Only one sentence.

LOOK UNDER THE THIRD TIER BEFORE THEY CUT IT.

No signature.

No explanation.

Just those words.

Carmine whispered,

"Boss..."

Vincent nodded.

"Bring the cake."

Celeste stepped forward instantly.

"No!"

The word escaped before she could stop herself.

Every head turned.

She forced a smile.

"I mean..."

"The guests are waiting."

"The cake should stay in the ballroom."

Too late.

Her reaction had betrayed her.

Vincent looked directly into her eyes.

"For the first time today..."

"...you sound nervous."

Outside, music drifted through the mansion.

Hundreds of elite guests laughed, toasted champagne, and waited for the wedding cake.

None of them realized that only thirty feet away...

Three armed guards were already wheeling that magnificent seven-tier masterpiece toward the service corridor.

The towering cake rolled slowly across the marble floor.

Everyone watched.

No one blinked.

Halfway down the hallway—

The lights suddenly went out.

Darkness swallowed the corridor.

Someone screamed.

Then—

A gunshot exploded through the mansion.

The cake stopped moving.

And when the emergency lights flickered back on two seconds later...

May you like

The cake was still there.

But Lily was gone.
