Chapter 5: The Little Boy Who Remembered Everything

Chapter 5: The Little Boy Who Remembered Everything

Kevin Ross stared at the photograph on the desk.

His mouth went dry.

"I... I don't know what you're talking about."

Richard Whitfield didn't blink.

"You have ten seconds to decide whether you're lying to me or helping yourself."

Daniel Brooks quietly closed the office door behind him.

The soft click sounded louder than a gunshot.

Kevin shifted his weight.

"Sir, that picture doesn't prove it's me."

"No," Richard replied evenly. "It proves someone wearing your security uniform entered the employee lockers before Maria's locker was searched."

Kevin forced a nervous laugh.

"Lots of guards wear this uniform."

Daniel folded his arms.

"Except every uniform carries an RFID tag."

Kevin's smile disappeared.

Daniel continued.

"The tag in that photograph belongs to yours."

Silence.

Richard leaned forward.

"So I'll ask again."

"Were you working alone?"

Kevin's eyes darted toward the only window in the room.

There was no escape.

"I..."

Before another word could leave his mouth, his phone vibrated inside his pocket.

Daniel reacted instantly.

"Don't."

Too late.

Kevin pulled out the phone.

His thumb moved toward the screen.

Daniel grabbed his wrist.

The phone slipped from Kevin's hand and crashed onto the floor.

The display lit up.

A new message appeared.

DELETE EVERYTHING. NOW.

Richard looked down.

The sender's name had been hidden.

But the timing was enough.

Someone was watching.

Someone knew Kevin had been questioned.

Daniel immediately handed the phone to the estate's IT specialist.

"Recover every deleted message."

Kevin lowered his head.

"I can't."

Richard frowned.

"Can't what?"

"I can't tell you."

"Why?"

Kevin whispered,

"They'll destroy me."

Richard's voice hardened.

"They already have."

Meanwhile, Maria sat outside in the estate garden while Matteo chased fallen leaves across the damp lawn.

For the first time all day, the little boy laughed.

The sound made several employees stop working.

None of them had expected laughter after everything that had happened.

Maria smiled despite herself.

Children had a remarkable ability to pull sunlight into the darkest places.

Matteo suddenly stopped beside one of the stone fountains.

"Mama."

"Yes?"

"I know the lady."

Maria looked up.

"What lady?"

"The one who was in your room."

Maria's smile faded.

"What do you mean?"

"The shiny bracelet lady."

Every instinct inside Maria came alive.

She knelt beside him.

"Matteo..."

Her voice stayed calm.

"Can you tell Mama what you saw?"

The little boy nodded seriously.

"Yesterday."

"Yes?"

"You were upstairs."

"I remember."

"I wanted my rabbit."

Maria frowned.

"You stayed in the library."

"I forgot Bunny."

"So?"

"I came looking."

Her heart skipped.

No one had known that.

"What happened then?"

Matteo pointed toward the east hallway.

"I saw the pretty lady."

"What pretty lady?"

"The one who smells like flowers."

Maria froze.

Only one employee always wore expensive jasmine perfume.

Diane Sinclair.

"What was she doing?"

Matteo answered with complete innocence.

"She opened your little door."

"My locker?"

He nodded.

"She put something inside."

Maria felt every hair on her arms stand up.

"And then?"

"She looked around."

"What else?"

"Then the security man came."

"Kevin?"

"I don't know."

"He had keys."

Maria's breathing became shallow.

"He gave her something."

"What?"

"A little silver stick."

Maria frowned.

"A stick?"

"It looked like Uncle Ben's memory toy."

A flash drive.

Richard walked into the garden just as Matteo finished speaking.

He hadn't intended to overhear.

Now he couldn't pretend he hadn't.

Maria quickly stood.

"I'm sorry, Mr. Whitfield. He's only four."

Richard looked at the child.

"What did you just say?"

Matteo looked up without fear.

"The flower lady."

Richard crouched until they were eye level.

"Do you know her name?"

The boy thought hard.

"No."

"What does she look like?"

"Pretty hair."

"Anything else?"

"Clicky shoes."

Richard almost smiled.

Everyone in the estate knew Diane's heels announced her arrival before she spoke.

"What did she put in your mother's locker?"

Matteo spread his hands.

"A shiny bag."

Richard exchanged a glance with Maria.

Neither of them spoke.

Children could confuse details.

But they almost never invented ordinary moments.

Especially not ones no adult had suggested.

Back inside the mansion, the IT specialist hurried into Richard's office.

"Sir."

"What is it?"

"We recovered Kevin's deleted messages."

Richard stood.

"Show me."

The technician projected them onto the large monitor.

Most had been erased.

A few remained.

The first simply read:

Camera offline in 5 minutes.

The second:

Locker is open. Finish it before inspection.

The third:

Sinclair says the boss won't question the evidence.

Richard's face hardened.

Daniel stared at the screen.

"That's enough for conspiracy."

Richard nodded slowly.

"Where is Diane?"

One of the assistants looked around nervously.

"She left about fifteen minutes ago."

Richard checked his watch.

"No one authorized that."

Another employee spoke quietly.

"Sir..."

"Yes?"

"I think she took a suitcase."

The room went silent.

Daniel immediately reached for his radio.

"Seal every gate."

Guards answered almost instantly.

"East gate secure."

"West gate secure."

"North entrance locked."

Then another voice burst through the radio.

"Vehicle approaching the south exit!"

Daniel shouted,

"Stop that car!"

Outside, black tires screamed against wet pavement.

A silver Mercedes accelerated toward the main gate.

Security vehicles pulled into its path.

The Mercedes swerved violently.

Missed one guard by inches.

Then smashed straight through the wooden barrier.

Splinters exploded into the air.

Richard watched the security feed in disbelief.

"Diane..."

She wasn't running because she was frightened.

She was running because she knew the truth had finally caught up with her.

But as the Mercedes disappeared onto the highway...

Neither Richard nor Daniel noticed one crucial detail hidden in the recovered messages.

Every instruction Kevin received ended with the same signature.

—R

Not D.

Not Sinclair.

Just one letter.

Meaning Diane Sinclair might not have been the mastermind after all.

May you like

She might have been running...

...from the real person behind everything.
