Chapter 5 - The Snake in the Mansion

Vincent’s blood turned to liquid fire. "How the hell did she escape? Marco left two men down there!"
"They're dead, Boss," the guard reported, his voice tight with panic. "Looks like she had a hidden ceramic blade sewn into the lining of her silk robe. She cut the throat of the guard who brought her water, took his keys and his sidearm. She knows the layout of the old mansion tunnels, Vincent. She’s heading upstairs. She knows about the kid."
Vincent’s grip on the phone was so tight the screen began to spiderweb. "If anything happens to that girl, I will skin every single person in that house alive. I’m ten minutes out. Tell the perimeter teams to close in on the third floor immediately!"
Vincent slammed the phone down and looked at Marco. "The mansion. Now. Forget the docks for ten minutes. The bitch is going after Lily."
The SUV driver slammed his foot on the accelerator, the tires screaming against the wet asphalt as the convoy pulled a violent U-turn, roaring back toward the Gold Coast.
Inside the mansion, the grand hallways were eerily quiet, illuminated only by the emergency red lights that had activated when the security breach was triggered.
On the third floor, Elena Ramirez stood near the heavy steel doors of the master bedroom, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. She could hear the muffled sound of shouting from the lower floors, followed by the distant echo of a gunshot.
"Mommy?" Lily asked from the bed, her small voice trembling. She had her Cubs cap tightly gripped in her hands. "What's that noise?"
"It's just the storm, baby," Elena lied, her voice cracking as she checked the heavy deadbolt on the door. "Mr. Moretti’s men are outside. We're safe."
Suddenly, the heavy wooden panels of the door groaned. A sharp, metallic clink echoed through the lock mechanism.
Elena took a step back, her eyes wide with terror. The guards outside had stopped responding to her knocks minutes ago.
The door handle turned. Slowly. Deliberately.
The heavy steel door swung open, and Vanessa Vale stepped into the room.
She no longer looked like the polished, high-society debutante. Her perfect blonde hair was matted with sweat and blood from the guard she had killed. Her silk robe was stained dark crimson at the cuffs. In her right hand, she held a heavy Glock 19 automatic pistol, its barrel pointed directly at Elena’s chest.
"Well, well," Vanessa whispered, a psychotic, brilliant smile stretching across her beautiful face. "The little kitchen rat and her bastard child. The ones who ruined my three-year investment in this city."
"Please," Elena begged, stepping in front of Lily, shielding her small body completely. "Please, Vanessa. We don't want anything. We won't say a word. Just take the cars, take the money in the safe downstairs, and leave."
"The money in the safe?" Vanessa laughed, a harsh, mocking sound. "I didn't do this for a few million dollars in a safe, you stupid peasant. I was about to control the entire shipping supply chain of the United States. I was going to be a queen in New York. And this little brat ruined it by looking through a keyhole."
Vanessa raised the gun, aligning the sights with Elena’s forehead. "I think I’ll kill you first. Then I’ll take the girl out to the balcony and let Vincent watch her drop when he pulls up the driveway. Let him see what happens when he trusts a maid over me."
"No!" Lily cried, trying to pull away from her mother’s grip to run forward.
"Stay back, Lily!" Elena screamed, closing her eyes, preparing for the impact of the bullet.
BANG.
The sound of the gunshot was deafening within the enclosed space of the bedroom.
But Elena didn't feel any pain. She opened her eyes.
Vanessa was still standing, but her eyes were wide with shock. A small, neat crimson circle had appeared in the exact center of her silk-covered left shoulder. The impact had spun her around, her gun flying out of her hand and skittering across the polished hardwood floor.
In the doorway stood Vincent Moretti.
His trench coat was soaked with rain, his chest heaving as he held his .45 caliber pistol with a perfectly steady hand. He had run up three flights of stairs in less than forty seconds, ignoring the burning agony in his lungs and the warnings of Dr. Harris.
"Get away from them," Vincent said, his voice dropping into a register that didn't sound human. It was the sound of an alpha predator defending its cub.
Vanessa collapsed against the edge of the velvet couch, clutching her bleeding shoulder, her face twisted in a mask of pure hatred. "You're too late, Vincent. Mikey Falcone is already at the docks. Your empire is dead anyway."
Vincent didn't answer her with words. He walked across the room, grabbed Vanessa by her blonde hair, and dragged her out into the hallway without a single trace of mercy. He threw her against the opposite wall, where Marco was already waiting with heavy plastic zip-ties.
"Throw her back in the cellar," Vincent ordered Marco. "This time, chain her to the load-bearing pillar. If she breaks loose again, I’ll bury you next to her."
"Understood, Boss," Marco said, his face pale with shame for his earlier failure. He dragged Vanessa away, her curses echoing down the long corridor until they were swallowed by the mansion's depths.
Vincent turned back into the bedroom. The terrifying fury vanished from his face the moment he looked at Lily.
He dropped his gun onto the dresser and sank to his knees, his body trembling from the sheer exertion.
Lily ran across the room, bypassing her mother, and threw her small arms around Vincent’s neck. She hugged him tightly, burying her face into his wet trench coat.
"You came," Lily whispered.
Vincent wrapped his massive arms around her, holding her so close he could feel the steady, rapid beat of her heart. For the first time in his thirty-eight years of life, Vincent Moretti felt a tear escape his eye, rolling down his cheek to mix with the rainwater.
"I will always come for you, Lily," Vincent said softly. "Always."
He looked up at Elena, who was kneeling beside them now, crying tears of sheer relief. Vincent reached out his hand, and after a moment of hesitation, Elena took it, her fingers locking with his.
"I need to finish this tonight," Vincent told Elena, his eyes searching hers. "The New York family is at the docks. If I don't crush them now, they’ll never stop coming for us. I need you to stay here with Marco. He will protect you with his life."
Elena looked at the man who had just saved her daughter, seeing past the monster the world feared to the protector she had once glimpsed years ago.
May you like
"Come back to us, Vincent," Elena said, her voice steady and full of meaning. "Please. Come back."
Vincent nodded, his chin tightening. "I will."
