CHAPTER 2 — THE FILE NO ONE WAS SUPPOSED TO SEE

CHAPTER 2 — THE FILE NO ONE WAS SUPPOSED TO SEE
Grace had barely finished wiping the coffee stain from her blouse when someone knocked softly on the restroom door.
"Miss Whitaker?"
It was one of the security guards.
"Mr. Bellandi wants you in the executive conference room. Now."
Her stomach dropped.
So this was it.
Maybe he had changed his mind.
Maybe keeping her had only been temporary until Legal finished the paperwork.
Grace took one deep breath and followed him upstairs.
The executive conference room occupied the entire top floor.
Floor-to-ceiling windows overlooked downtown Boston, but nobody admired the view.
Luca Bellandi stood at the head of the black marble table.
Around him sat every senior executive in the company.
Legal.
Finance.
Compliance.
Corporate Security.
No one spoke as Grace entered.
She immediately noticed something different.
The forged contract lay in the center of the table.
Beside it were twelve more documents.
Luca looked directly at her.
"Sit."
She obeyed without a word.
Luca slid the stack toward her.
"Tell me if you see anything."
Grace blinked.
"Sir... I'm not a forensic analyst."
"I know."
"I'm just a secretary."
"For now."
The room became even quieter.
Paul DeVries folded his arms.
"This is ridiculous."
Marlene looked uncomfortable.
One executive whispered, "We're wasting time."
Luca never looked away from Grace.
"You found something thirty experienced employees missed."
"So look again."
Grace slowly picked up the first document.
She wasn't looking at signatures anymore.
She was looking at habits.
Tiny details.
Pressure.
Spacing.
Margins.
She turned another page.
Then another.
Five minutes passed.
Ten.
Nobody interrupted.
Finally she stopped.
"This one."
She pointed to the sixth contract.
"It isn't forged."
Paul frowned.
"What?"
Grace swallowed.
"The signature is genuine."
Everyone stared.
"But..."
She reached for another page.
"The contract itself isn't."
Silence.
She continued carefully.
"Someone printed the agreement after Mr. Bellandi signed the final page."
Paul laughed.
"That's impossible."
Grace shook her head.
"No."
She pointed toward the staple holes.
"The pages don't line up."
Several executives leaned closer.
"The signature page has older staple marks."
"The first pages don't."
"They were switched."
Nobody spoke.
Grace kept going.
"The paper stock is different."
"The margins changed by less than one millimeter."
"The printer toner isn't the same."
"This page came from another machine."
Paul's confidence disappeared.
Luca slowly looked toward Corporate Security.
"Verify."
Within minutes the company's document specialist rushed into the room.
He scanned both pages.
Ran them through forensic software.
Compared microscopic toner patterns.
Then his face turned white.
"Mr. Bellandi..."
He looked around the room.
"She's right."
The conference room exploded.
"That's impossible!"
"Who had access?"
"Every approval went through Legal!"
Paul slammed both hands on the table.
"This is absurd!"
Luca's voice cut through the shouting.
"Enough."
Instant silence.
He turned toward Paul.
"Who prepared these acquisitions?"
"My department."
"Who handled the originals?"
"My assistant."
"Names."
Paul hesitated.
For the first time since Grace had met him...
He hesitated.
Luca noticed.
"So."
His voice became dangerously calm.
"You suddenly need to remember?"
Paul quickly answered.
"I'll have the records immediately."
"No."
Luca pressed a button beneath the table.
The conference room doors locked with a metallic click.
Everyone turned.
Three armed security officers stepped inside.
No one smiled.
Luca looked at the head of Corporate Security.
"Nobody leaves this floor."
The temperature in the room seemed to fall ten degrees.
Paul slowly stood.
"Surely this isn't necessary."
Luca met his eyes.
"If someone forged my signature..."
"...they didn't steal from my company."
"They declared war on my family."
No one dared breathe.
Grace felt her pulse racing.
She had expected office politics.
She had walked into something much darker.
Luca picked up the forged agreement once more.
"This document authorizes the transfer of Harbor District Holdings."
Finance gasped.
One executive whispered,
"That's worth nearly four hundred million dollars..."
Grace's eyes widened.
One forged signature...
Could have erased an empire.
Luca looked at her again.
"You noticed this because of a coffee stain."
Grace nodded nervously.
"The ink reflected differently after it got wet."
The room froze.
"What?"
She pointed carefully.
"Real signatures absorb moisture evenly."
"This one separated."
"It looked..."
"...painted."
Even the forensic examiner stared at her.
"She's correct."
"Modern signature simulation ink reacts differently to water."
Luca remained silent.
Then something happened no employee had ever witnessed.
The feared mafia heir...
Smiled.
Only slightly.
But enough.
"Interesting."
Paul's face lost all color.
Because Luca Bellandi never smiled...
Unless he had already decided who was about to lose.
At that exact moment—
One of the security officers received a message through his earpiece.
He immediately stiffened.
"Mr. Bellandi..."
"The archive room."
"It's on fire."
Every head snapped toward him.
Then the emergency alarms screamed throughout Bellandi Tower.
Luca's expression turned to ice.
"The original contracts..."
He didn't finish the sentence.
He didn't have to.
Someone wasn't trying to hide one forged document.
Someone was trying to burn every piece of evidence before the truth could be uncovered.
And suddenly...
May you like
Grace Whitaker realized the coffee she had spilled that morning hadn't just saved Luca Bellandi's fortune.
It may have made both of them the next targets.
