CHAPTER 6: THE TRUTH PATRICIA COULDN'T HIDE

CHAPTER 6: THE TRUTH PATRICIA COULDN'T HIDE

The courtroom remained hushed as everyone waited for the recess to end.

Thomas stood near the window overlooking the snow-covered courthouse lawn. Jason sat beside him, quietly coloring in a Christmas activity book a court clerk had found in the children's waiting room.

Lucy and Lily sat together with Catherine, their small hands intertwined.

Neither had spoken since leaving the witness stand.

Melissa Harper approached Thomas.

"You did the right thing."

Thomas shook his head.

"They did the brave thing."

He looked toward the twins.

"I just happened to stop the car."

Melissa smiled sadly.

"Sometimes that's enough to change a life."

The courtroom doors opened again.

Patricia returned.

But something had changed.

Her expensive coat was wrinkled.

Her lipstick had faded.

Most noticeably, she was alone.

Her attorney was nowhere to be seen.

Judge Briggs frowned.

"Ms. Wells, where is your counsel?"

A different man stepped forward.

"Your Honor, Mr. Donovan has withdrawn from representation."

A ripple moved through the courtroom.

"Why?"

"I'm appearing only to request a continuance while Ms. Wells secures new counsel."

Judge Briggs narrowed her eyes.

"On what grounds did previous counsel withdraw?"

The attorney hesitated.

"I... cannot discuss privileged communications."

The judge nodded slowly, though her expression suggested she had drawn her own conclusions.

"Request denied."

"We're proceeding."

Deputy Collins entered through a side door.

He carried a large evidence box.

Melissa looked surprised.

"I thought you were at the Wells residence."

"I was."

"What happened?"

"We executed an emergency welfare search."

Every eye turned toward him.

Patricia's face went completely white.

Deputy Collins placed several items on the evidence table.

A wooden ruler.

A leather belt.

A fireplace poker with a rounded brass tip.

Then...

A small pink notebook.

Lucy gasped.

"My diary."

Patricia looked down.

Melissa carefully opened the diary.

The pages were covered in childish handwriting.

Some words were misspelled.

Others written backward.

Each page ended exactly the same way.

Today I tried to be good.

One entry read:

Aunt Patricia said smiling is disrespectful.

Another:

Lily was hungry so I gave her my bread.

Another:

Mommy said love isn't supposed to hurt.

Thomas had to look away.

Deputy Collins spoke.

"The search also uncovered surveillance cameras."

Judge Briggs looked puzzled.

"Cameras?"

"Inside the children's bedrooms."

The courtroom erupted in whispers.

Patricia stood abruptly.

"They were for safety!"

Deputy Collins calmly continued.

"Only the children's rooms."

"No cameras elsewhere in the house."

The silence that followed felt heavy.

Then Collins removed one final item from the evidence box.

A metal cash box.

Locked.

"We obtained the combination from paperwork inside the residence."

He opened it.

Inside were dozens of neatly organized envelopes.

Each one labeled.

Lucy.

Lily.

Birth certificates.

Social Security cards.

Insurance paperwork.

School records.

Nothing unusual.

Until Collins reached the bottom.

"There was another envelope."

He lifted it carefully.

Across the front were the words:

Property Trust.

Melissa opened it.

Inside were bank statements.

Investment records.

Annual trust reports.

The account balance made several people quietly inhale.

Over three million dollars.

The forty acres Rebecca had inherited had recently been leased to a renewable energy company while awaiting future development.

The trust had grown substantially.

Judge Briggs looked directly at Patricia.

"Were you aware of these assets?"

Patricia didn't answer.

"Were you serving as trustee?"

Silence.

The judge asked again.

"Ms. Wells?"

Finally...

"...Yes."

"Did you disclose these assets to the court when guardianship was established?"

"...No."

The judge's expression hardened.

"Why not?"

Patricia whispered something almost inaudible.

"What was that?"

"I didn't think it mattered."

Catherine slowly stood.

"It mattered."

Everyone turned toward her.

"Rebecca established strict instructions."

She held up another document from the folder.

"The trustee was permitted to spend trust funds only for the girls' care."

Melissa scanned the accounting records.

Then her face changed.

"Your Honor..."

She flipped through page after page.

"There are withdrawals."

Judge Briggs frowned.

"For what?"

Melissa read aloud.

"Luxury vehicle payments."

"European vacation."

"Kitchen renovation."

"Designer jewelry."

None of the expenses mentioned food.

Clothing.

School supplies.

Or medical care for the girls.

Thomas closed his eyes.

Lucy and Lily had been freezing outside with stale bread...

While the money meant to care for them had financed Patricia's lifestyle.

Patricia suddenly exploded.

"I deserved it!"

Every head snapped toward her.

For years, she had worn the mask of the grieving, devoted aunt.

Now it shattered.

"I gave up my life!"

"I took those ungrateful children into my home!"

"I earned every penny!"

Lucy flinched.

Instinctively.

Even across the courtroom.

Thomas noticed.

So did Judge Briggs.

Patricia pointed toward the twins.

"They ruined everything!"

"They looked at me exactly like Rebecca did!"

"They always chose each other!"

"They never loved me!"

Lily buried her face against Catherine's shoulder.

Lucy wrapped an arm around her sister.

Neither child spoke.

They didn't need to.

The truth was unfolding on its own.

Judge Briggs struck the gavel sharply.

"Enough."

She looked directly at Patricia.

"Based on the testimony, medical evidence, documentary evidence, and financial records presented today..."

She paused.

"...this court immediately suspends your guardianship."

Patricia stared in disbelief.

Judge Briggs continued.

"The court further orders a criminal investigation into allegations of child abuse, neglect, fiduciary misconduct, and possible financial exploitation."

Deputy Collins stepped forward.

"Ms. Wells..."

He gently took hold of her wrist.

"...you're under arrest."

Patricia looked wildly around the courtroom.

At the judge.

At Melissa.

At Catherine.

Finally...

At the twins.

"You did this!"

Lucy didn't answer.

Instead, she quietly reached for Lily's hand.

For the first time since Thomas had met them...

Neither girl looked afraid.

They simply watched as Patricia was led from the courtroom.

Without screaming.

Without crying.

Without looking back.

An hour later, the courtroom was nearly empty.

Christmas afternoon sunlight filtered through the tall windows.

Judge Briggs remained on the bench.

"There is one final matter."

She smiled gently at the twins.

"You two need somewhere safe while the investigation continues."

Melissa nodded.

"CPS has several emergency foster families available."

Before she could continue, Jason stood up.

Everyone looked at him.

He blushed slightly.

"My dad has pancakes."

The courtroom became unexpectedly quiet.

"And hot chocolate."

He looked at the judge with complete sincerity.

"They like both."

A few people smiled through their tears.

Judge Briggs looked toward Thomas.

"Mr. Grayson..."

"Would you be willing to serve as their emergency foster placement while the court completes its investigation?"

Thomas looked at Lucy.

Then Lily.

Then Jason.

Finally at the empty seat where Patricia had been only minutes before.

He thought of Elizabeth.

Of the promise he had made on Christmas Eve.

No one is sending them back.

He smiled.

"Yes."

Without hesitation.

"Absolutely."

Lucy suddenly crossed the courtroom.

She stopped in front of Thomas.

"Are you sure?"

He knelt so they were eye to eye.

"I've never been more sure of anything."

Tears filled Lucy's eyes.

Very slowly...

As though she still wasn't certain she was allowed...

She wrapped her arms around him.

A second later, Lily joined the hug.

Jason squeezed in from the side.

Catherine wiped away happy tears.

Melissa smiled.

Even Judge Briggs quietly removed her glasses to brush away a tear before speaking.

"Merry Christmas."

No one in the courtroom realized it then.

But rescuing the twins on that snowy Christmas Eve had not only saved two little girls.

It had also begun the healing of a family that none of them had expected to find.
