CHAPTER 4 – THE SECRET INSIDE ELI'S BACKPACK

CHAPTER 4 – THE SECRET INSIDE ELI'S BACKPACK

The next morning, Noah Bell opened his eyes.

Only for three seconds.

But it was enough.

"Dad..."

It wasn't really a word.

More of a tiny sound.

Yet Garrison laughed and cried at the same time.

Doctors smiled throughout the ICU.

The impossible recovery had begun.

Across the hall, Melissa Grant completed temporary emergency paperwork.

Eli would remain under hospital supervision until Child Protective Services determined his next placement.

When she came looking for him...

He was gone.

Panic spread immediately.

Security checked exits.

Nurses searched waiting rooms.

Garrison's heart lurched.

"Did he run?"

Melissa closed her eyes.

"He always runs."

But Eli wasn't escaping.

He had quietly walked three blocks to the downtown shelter.

Inside, two small children sat sharing a cup of instant noodles.

Five-year-old twins.

Ben and Mia.

"I brought dinner."

Their eyes lit up.

"You got cookies!"

Eli laughed.

"I told you I'd find something."

The twins hugged him so tightly he nearly fell over.

From the doorway, Melissa watched without interrupting.

Beside her stood Garrison Bell.

Neither spoke.

They simply watched the boy give away almost everything he had.

Again.

Back at the hospital later that afternoon, Nurse Evelyn picked up Eli's worn backpack after it accidentally fell to the floor.

Several items spilled out.

A cracked flashlight.

Three pencils.

A notebook.

Medical textbooks borrowed from the public library.

And beneath them...

A thick envelope tied with faded blue string.

Across the front, in careful handwriting, were the words:

"For Eli's Future."

Melissa frowned.

"What's this?"

Eli's face instantly turned pale.

"Please don't open it."

But the string had already loosened.

Dozens of papers slid across the floor.

Hospital bills.

School certificates.

Letters.

And one sealed document that caught everyone's attention.

Dr. Whitlock picked it up.

It carried the logo of a prestigious medical research foundation.

Across the top were words that made the room go completely silent.

CONFIDENTIAL SCHOLARSHIP NOMINATION

Below it...

One handwritten sentence.

Recommended by Dr. Samuel Hayes before his death.

Dr. Whitlock whispered,

"...Samuel Hayes?"

The legendary pediatric surgeon.

One of the greatest physicians in the country.

Dead for nearly two years.

She slowly looked at Eli.

"How... did you know Dr. Hayes?"

Eli swallowed.

Tears welled in his eyes for the first time.

"He..."

"...he was my grandfather."

The entire room froze.
