CHAPTER 7 – THE TRUTH GRACE DIED TO PROTECT

CHAPTER 7 – THE TRUTH GRACE DIED TO PROTECT

Nathan, Detective Brooks, and three police cruisers reached the Whitmore estate in less than fifteen minutes.

The front door stood open.

A cold wind drifted through the silent house.

Every light was on.

Drawers had been ripped open.

Paintings hung crooked.

Family photographs lay shattered across the marble floor.

Whoever had come wasn't looking for valuables.

They were looking for one thing.

Grace's secrets.

"The attic!" Nathan shouted.

They rushed upstairs.

The false wall had been smashed apart with a crowbar.

The cedar chest lay upside down.

Letters were scattered across the dusty floor like autumn leaves.

But something caught Clara's eye.

"The journal..."

Nathan looked down.

"It's gone."

Whoever broke in had ignored the letters.

Ignored the jewelry.

Ignored the cash hidden in an old envelope.

They had taken only Grace's journal.

Because it contained something they feared.

Detective Brooks ordered forensic teams through the house.

Within an hour, they found a single fingerprint on the broken panel.

The lab rushed the comparison.

Thirty-six minutes later Brooks received the call.

"It's a match."

"To who?"

He looked at Nathan.

"Victor Langley."

Nathan closed his eyes.

Ten years of friendship dissolved into nothing.

An arrest warrant was issued immediately.

Police stormed Victor's downtown penthouse.

Empty.

His office.

Empty.

His private jet.

Gone.

"He left forty minutes ago," an FBI agent reported.

"Destination?"

"No flight plan."

Nathan stared through the airport window.

Victor wasn't running because he was innocent.

He was running because he knew the truth was finally catching him.

That evening the forensic team made an astonishing discovery.

Mrs. Ellis had saved one of Grace's old prescription bottles from the week before she died.

Modern testing revealed traces of a rare blood-pressure medication.

A medication Grace had never been prescribed.

Dr. Pierce reviewed the report twice.

Then quietly said,

"An overdose of this drug could trigger a sudden brain hemorrhage."

Nathan felt his knees weaken.

Grace hadn't simply collapsed.

Someone had caused it.

Detective Brooks looked at him carefully.

"We're officially treating your wife's death as homicide."

Ten years after her funeral...

Grace finally received justice.

Meanwhile, Victor crossed the Canadian border using a false passport.

He believed he had escaped.

He smiled for the first time in days.

Then his phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

"What?"

A calm voice replied.

"You forgot one thing."

Victor frowned.

"What are you talking about?"

"The journal you stole."

His smile disappeared.

"What about it?"

"You took the wrong one."

The line went dead.

Victor slammed on the brakes.

"What?"

He grabbed the leather journal from the passenger seat.

His hands shook as he opened it.

Every page was blank.

Except the first.

In Grace's handwriting were eight words.

The truth was never hidden in here.

Victor's face turned white.

He had fallen into Grace's final trap.
